Mac vs PC
Something wrong here.
Re: Mac vs PC
Yeah, those glasses..Yeck! ;P
I think the solid state drive made the difference there. Also, W7 is a bit more bloated than Mac (unix) OS.
We're talking 2 seconds difference. (watch it again and count it out.) That's it. Call it much-ado about nothing.
Price wasn't mentioned either.
Sorry Mac, that doesn't impress me.

Re: Mac vs PC
I use Windows Based products since that is what everything I use and develop software-wise is used on.
Used to have an OLD Apple-][... nice computer back in those days.
I don't hate Apple's MacIntosh line of products... just not familiar with them.
Choose the one that works best for you... I reserve the right to do the same thing.
Bottom line, don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Re: Mac vs PC
oh no SW, I've nothing against Macs. Just geeks that take little issues and make them into huge market killing finds gets on my nerves.
seriously ... too much drama over a wake time.

Totally useless benchmark and even the author says they are not comparing apples to apples, so whats the point then? Also that is one scary looking woman... it even has arm hair if you look closely, I thought at first that it was a guy that needed a bra.

I'd much rather have the Commodor.

Re: Mac vs PC
I'd wait for the paid subscription service of Windows Cloud OS (or whatever it will be called). Not because I'd use it, but because it will be in response to competition and better internet availability. But that's all debatable and mostly speculation. At that time, operating systems, like chorme, will be ready for people like me.vision wrote:So, Chrome OS?Isaac wrote:I think what os you run will become less of an issue in the future. heh.
once I heard that it's not an apples to apples comparison, i just wrote it off as biased.
a much better test would be a w7 laptop with an SSD drive vs that macbook.

until i realized that you can do the same thing by buying a mini ITX board, scrounging a dead C64, and putting the two together and adding on emulation software.

Oh that explains why! It's actually a religious experience for Mac and Apple users! After all, who would want to worship a stodgy nerd like Bill Gates.

Re: Mac vs PC
I recently spoke to a Mac user who believes that people who purchase Apple products as a status symbol are a very small percentage of those who buy them. He also disagreed that Apple was restricting its users.

Re: Mac vs PC
Some of this you can probably attribute to Microsoft spending so much effort on hardening Windows. Since the dominant player has gotten so tough to crack, the malware writers are going after softer targets that used to be off the radar. Which explains why third party software like Adobe pdf gets exploited so much and mac/android/smartphone malware is on the rise.

Re: Mac vs PC
Maybe I'm just the resident tin hatter, but I'm guessing the driving reason that Microsoft is coming out with Windows 8 so soon after Win 7 was released (comparatively speaking) is because they can then drop support for the giant swiss cheese of an OS called XP.
Have any of you noticed a distinct drop in email spam since Microsoft and the Feds brought down the Rustock Botnet? Every bit of spam vanished from one of my email accounts that had been compromised.

Re: Mac vs PC
I've gotten very little spam in any of my 3 email accounts in the last 5 years so I wouldn't notice. But I think I've seen some recent studies showing that the overall volume of spam on the internet has been declining in the last couple years, thanks in part to Microsoft and the Feds shutting down botnets.
Also XP was swiss cheese, but its pretty solid in its current (patched) form. Microsoft is planning on shipping Windows 8 so soon after Windows 7 mostly to grab more revenue than for any other reason. That is also probably why some of the new features planned for Windows 7 got dropped before the OS shipped, if they had ended up in 7 then nobody would have much of a reason to upgrade to 8...

Re: Mac vs PC
Win7->"Win8" gap is probably about as long as Vista->Win7. It's a much shorter cycle than from XP to Vista, but that was generally considered too long, so the "new normal" is possibly a bit closer to the sweet spot - if slightly on the frequent side for businesses (though IIRC it's timed for the average business PC refresh cycle, so maybe not so much).
In such a model, though, deadlines are relatively inflexible, and if a feature isn't looking like it'll be done in time for one release, it gets pushed off to the next (there are a few exceptions where it ships in a service pack, but this rarely happens nowadays - service packs are mostly about fixes).

Windows XP will turn 10 years old this Oct 25. We will have to prepare to throw it a party for 10th anniversary, and be very nice to it before it dies like an old operating system.
I love WinXP so much, I will miss it.

XP was great. I used it for many years and never had to reinstall it, and only got a blue-screen on rare occasions when I was messing with things I shouldn't have. The move from XP to Vista seemed like such a huge step backwards that I never "upgraded" and decided to leave Microsoft completely for Linux.Isaac wrote:Yeah. Re: Mac vs PC
I only fresh installed XP after significant hardware upgrades, there were plenty of times where I went in excess of one month in XP without even rebooting and all the reboots I did do were from installing updates.
Re: Mac vs PC
I think the way apple does this (it's the way I would) Is to just take a screenshot before it goes to sleep.
Then you "wake it up" and it starts the display manager and an image viewer, displaying the "screen"
Then it loads the mouse, so the user can move the pointer, you can't click on anything yet, but who's going to notice.
Then everything else is loaded.
The fact is you can't use a laptop for the first few seconds after sleeping because it's lid has to be opened.
Windows tries to load everything in the normal order.

Re: Mac vs PC
Well, ALL the spam in my one email account went to absolutely ZERO the same day Rustock was shut down and that was the account that was compromised when a website I was signed up in got hacked a few years back. Haven't had ONE spam since, cross my fingers! The day before, I would get at least 3 or 4 a day. One of my other accounts still gets the same spam it always does, Rolex watch offers, Viagra, sweepstakes offers, some bank claiming my account needs attention, etc.Krom wrote:I've gotten very little spam in any of my 3 email accounts in the last 5 years so I wouldn't notice. Re: Mac vs PC
While using Windows XP, it never went die or exploded up like Windows 95. Heh! But I got a blue screen of death that caused by my old video card.
So, I'm planning to buy Windows 7 Professional. But I'm not sure if Ultimate version is recommended for me because it has "too many" features such as back up, security tools, and etc. I already have an anti-virus program, anti-malware program, and external back up hard disk.

Re: Mac vs PC
Features can be disabled, and AV/security tools are not Ultimate-exclusive ones that I can remember. I think automatic back-up to network drives was a Pro feature, the rest is available in Home Premium, from recollection.
Ultimate only adds a handful of additional things, which are not particularly important to most people (there's VHD booting, MUI packs, and weird minutiae like Aero Glass rendering in RDP sessions). Chances are it's not worth the $20 or so extra it'd cost.
