Atomic Gives Descent some <3 !

Post by Duper »

Here's a great write-up on an old gamer's memories of Descent. Great time to refresh everyone's memories!

Yeah, that summed up Descent and it's following pretty well.

That got me thinking. What's the oldest video game still being regularly played today? I don't keep up on these things, but Descent and it's successors seem to top the list. :?:

I'm pretty sure the original Doom still has a fairly active community, so that would have Descent beaten by a bit.

Nethack (1987) and other roguelikes are still being played. Then there's DooM (1993) and then Descent (1995). I don't know of any other video games from that era or sooner that are still actively played in semi-original incarnations.

There are plenty of multiplayer console titles from that era, of course, though that doesn't really count as far as online play goes. :P

Just looking at the original Doom now gives me a headache! How did we ever play that with those colors (and I played it for hours)? Descent still gives me good entertainment without the eye burn.

I think you'll find a good following of the UT series. I still play UT 2004 online and it is amazing the number of maps players have created

Yeah, I believe UT still has a decent following - though the first UT was in 1999, and Unreal was released in '98, so the Descent (1/2) and Doom (also 1/2) games still have it easily beat for longevity.

Starcraft is a year newer than Descent 2 and two than Descent, but in terms of sheer size of following versus age, I'm pretty sure it's the biggest outlier one could care to mention.

I can't give credit for that one to alcohol. I could claim that I gained the knack for incomprehensibility from my brief study of Latin perhaps...

The old 2d adventure games still seem to be selling in stores. I really like those.
