Interplay on the rocks

Post by dwlpunk »

Well this is pretty sad. I've been watching this company for a while now.

I feel bad for those few investors on their forums that just bought 50,000+ shares back in February. I almost thought about doing the same. Maybe with the popular rehashing of old games and being redesigned and being sold as "HD" versions will bring Descent back.

Maybe they can sell the rights to Descent to a more stable company for 2.9 milion.

No matter what happens, I hope they can keep Descent and FreeSpace up on GOG.com. It's a great resource for both communities to have them available there.

with the right people it would be easy as pie to remake descent with the unreal engine or crytechs engine. it would take very few resources today. look how fast they resurrected, polished, and pushed duke nukem forever out.

Freespace should go to THQ/Volition.

dwlpunk, I'm thinking that they already have a contract to have it made. Earth Worm Jim, Clayfighter and MDK are all in the make right now.

What engine? no clue. I'm guessing, but by what's been posted and what questions have been asked leads me to think this. We're still waiting for Descent 1 to hit the Wii. It should be out soon. They were "unofficially" incorporating the Enemy within Set ... I think. DW might be able to share a bit on this matter... but anyways. It's on the way. :)

I belive it was Vignettes that they're throwing in (hopefully), not TEW.

Yeah, there was a WiiWare conversion of Descent on the way, actually supposed to be nearly done. Sapphire Wolf is correct that the level set that was going to be thrown in as a bonus extra was Descent Vignettes. We're hoping level 25 doesn't crash.

And I signed over the rights to four or five months worth of songs for Vignettes... so I'll be very disappointed if vignettes doesn't get in or the songs aren't used...

straying off course a little bit, but i'll bite.

i don't know much about the wiiware conversions. i've had a wii for some time and got it in anticipation for the DLC. I think it would work really well to also have it converted to the PS3 using the sixaxis controller. I've toyed with the emulator and controls before and it really does work well with descent. It reminded me of playing with the spaceorb 360, just without the orb..

Anyway if they want to sell the rights for a reasonable price i think personally investing in such venture with a few partners would be worth it. However 2.9 mil is way way to much for a completely dead franchise. I'd say a couple hundred grand.

When I read the interview with their new CEO my first thought was: Interplay is now completely doomed.
The guy seemed more interested in how much he hates industry politics than he was with actually publishing games...

On practically every question he found a way to get back to his hate of industry politics... sometimes completely skipping the part where he should, you know, answer the question.

The only other topic he really talked about was the reasons he thought so many of his previous games had failed... wait, did I say that that topic was something different from how he hates industry politics? My bad.

IIRC, as far as I read before it bored me completely out of my mind, he didn't mention even one thing that he could have done better.
