D2 Install from CD on Win 7 64 bit?
How do we run the install? Keeps giving me an error that it's not made to run on 64 bit.

I've never been able to run a D1/D2 install on an x64 machine. I've always just copied the files I need from the disc into a D2X-XL or D2X-Rebirth installation.

Ah, of course. I didn't even think about that.
Another option, if you have D2 installed elsewhere, is just to copy the whole folder over to the x64 machine.

I used DOS Box and installed D2 and Vertigo. I'm now RARing the whole install to keep for later.

7-zip can also open the archives that the D1 and D2 cds use, but in some cases dosbox is the only way to apply patches.

Re: D2 Install from CD on Win 7 64 bit?
Well, after having it installed, I'm unable to get D2XL working. I'm following the instructions on there web site but when I try running the exe, it keeps telling me it can't find the HOG file. It's the max install of D2. I don't want to register at that site just for this but I guess I will have to.

Doesn't D2X-XL use some subfolder for the hog file / data files? Also odds are it won't work unless you download and put in all the high resolution texture / model packs that are on the D2X-XL site.
Re: D2 Install from CD on Win 7 64 bit?
You don't have to have them installed. It does use subfolders for data though (I think the d2 files all go under /data). I was under the impression that something automatically moved/copied them, but I may be mistaken about that.
Re: D2 Install from CD on Win 7 64 bit?
I sometimes copy both Descent folders from internal hard disk to external hard disk for back up, to avoid losing saved games and settings. No reinstall anymore.

Merlin, here is a thread over at the D2X-XL site which might answer your question about where to place the .hog files.

Re: D2 Install from CD on Win 7 64 bit?
I finally figured it all out by usign there forums on the weekend. Now I'm just having issues with the game not setting my axis right with my 3d pro with usb adapter. I start a game and I'm constantly banking.

Make sure your joystick throttle is centered before assigning any axis.CDN_Merlin wrote:I finally figured it all out by usign there forums on the weekend. Now I'm just having issues with the game not setting my axis right with my 3d pro with usb adapter. I start a game and I'm constantly banking.

Re: D2 Install from CD on Win 7 64 bit?
Is that the trick? Damn, I'll try that tonight. If it is, it should be mentioned in there Install Guide. I will let them know also if it works.

Re: D2 Install from CD on Win 7 64 bit?
It isn't really a trick so much as an annoyance that tends to get overlooked a lot. If the throttle isn't centered on the stick, then when you go to assign an axis the throttle usually gets picked up first and you end up spinning out of control in some way.
One way to be sure before you even get to the config is to flip the throttle switch on the stick and see if you start banking the other way. If that happens, center the throttle so you don't spin anymore, then try to assign bank to the correct axis you wanted and that should fix it.
