Keyboard Sculpture

Post by Tunnelcat »

This is an interesting representation of the frequency of key use on a typical english-based computer keyboard. I did notice that the space and shift keys seem to have been omitted. He was probably just looking at letter usage. Fun sculpture though.

Wow! I see a trend. On mine, backspace would be the highest. :P

The wear marks on all of the keyboards in my house suggest this sculpture is far from accurate, but it's any interesting thing anyway.

it'd be interesting to see the same frequencies overlaid on an alphabetic or Dvorak keyboard layout.

About a dozen of the labels on my keyboard are missing entirely, and many more are very worn.

Playing games may skew the results. I've worn out the lettering on the WASD keys on one of my other keyboards that just had tampo printed letters on the keys. My new keyboard has double-injection molded back-lit letters, so they won't wear off.

My WASD are doing all right (which is kind of miraculous for a 7-year-old generic Dell keyboard), other than having more nasty gunk between them than most other keys, but my space bar has a nice shiny spot where my right thumb always hits it.

Um hum! The shiny spots are a dead giveaway! Skin oil and calluses really polish plastic quite nicely.

Actually, I wore out the 'W' key on one cheap keyboard, and one cheap mechanical mouse died too.
