The thing weighs a lot for its size. Notice my pinking bending the wrong way...

My vote is a gourd of some sort.

I'm not much of a gardener, but I'd guess that it won't kill you, but neither will it taste very good.

I did a search on gourds. I can't find anything that looks like this....

It's a melon and there are several different varieties. Just wrap some Prosciutto around chucks of it and eat.

Clue:

It grew off a vine that had climbed up a tree. This green-pumpkin-like thing was suspended in the air, instead of laying on the ground. This might have effected its shape.

We've had random pumpkin and gourd plants growing out back from the remains of the previous year's Halloween decorations. It's fun to see something like that just start taking over the whole garden.
