buds bumping bass, boom ba baa boom

Post by Isaac »

So far I think skullcandy is the best earbuds money can buy. I've had many others. JVC was pretty good, but they didn't last as long. That spongy memory foam isn't long term and the speakers will die.

Skullcandy has rubber that sucks into your skull and can deliver really nice bass with that pocket of air between its speaker and your ear drum.

It seems like every other brand LOOOOVES treble. I don't know why. It's like they've never listened to music before. Even when listening to Mozart, who wants nails-on-a-chalkboard high, crap, treble? Nobody. I want everything in balance, which includes those instruments that are very low and hard to hear unless bass in turned up.

Any other brands out there I should consider?

I think you should consider ditching earbuds for outer ear, if you want to retain your hearing long term. Earbuds are pretty much proven to be the worst kind of headphones you can use to listen to music with.

I'd feel the same way if I hadn't gotten the other kind I mention in my original post.

Adver's right.

if you want bass, then you need a larger speaker. Earbuds simply aren't large enough for descent bass. In-canals like skullcandies have slighty better bass due to sound isolation - most earbuds have the same general frequency range.

Also most classical music doesn't' really get down into the low frequencies.

try the tests here for something thats non-subjective.

High quality cans universally beat buds in frequency response, especially at the lower end. The only place for buds is for portable use in situations where full coverage headphones are impractically large/heavy.

x2 I'm quite mobile.

Also, earbuds are better at keeping noise from reaching the ears of others around you, which is good in a study area on campus. That's mainly why I won't use anything but earbuds with my netbook. Maybe good strap-on (?) headphones are just for home use.

Classical music doesn't go down to bass????

Yes it does, try listening to Pachelbels Cannon with little bass and you'll miss the whole point of it.
Eh?

When I said low frequencies, I mean LFE.

Look into sealed (or closed) headphones, most regular headphones are referred to as "open" and can be easily overheard by someone near the listener, sealed headphones provide a level of noise isolation (although not as strong as sealed in-ear buds) and can't be easily overheard unless they are turned up to volume levels that would be outright dangerous/painful for the listener.

I have a pair of studio Sennheiser headphones that work great - they aren't made to make music sound cool, they are meant so you can hear everything with clarity.

Like when playing xbox live, and I can hear someones footsteps behind me...

If you're looking for bass, well then, I'm afraid that this is the only way to go, unless you happen to have the guitar amp from back to the future....

Didn't that exterminate the Mayans?

Kind of off topic, but I seriously wish Audio Jungle could have streaming music - I like a lot of the stuff there.

I'm surprised youtube doesn't have an "audio-only" option for playlists.

I tend to agree with the folks at HeadRoom. They like Skullcandy, but others get higher ratings. I've had a pair of Etymotic ER-4S in-ear monitors for years. They're great, but a little weak on the low end.

Thank you!

edit:
My old skull candy buds cost me 20 dollars, but they're busted now. Some research shows that the problem could be related to them breaking open and having a bad connection. Eventually I did break one open by accident and glued its case back closed. I think that could be what the problem was. I have a soldering gun and some solder. I just need to figure out how to remove the old solder that's already there to reconnect the wire. If that doesn't work, I'll just have to buy new ones.
