Sharia in Toronto: the Muslim Girls on Their Period Have to Sit in the Back

This sort of thing should send a chill down the spine of anyone who understands what it means for a country to be free or for a school to be public.

It never ceases to amaze. Sharia is putting down roots all over the West, in ever more explicit and obvious ways. And bien pensant folks on the Left continue to insist, fiercely and self-righteously, that nothing of the kind is going on — even though it’s happening right under their noses.

One of the lastest breathtaking examples: a public middle school in Toronto where Friday prayers are part of the curriculum.

At the centre of the controversy is Valley Park Middle School near Don Mills Rd. It allows the local Muslim community to offer a Friday afternoon prayer in the school cafeteria for part of the year. They do this so that 400 students don’t miss as many classes as they would if they left the school to attend prayers at the closest mosque.

The school does not run the prayer service; the community organizes it and brings in an imam. Students do not have to attend; indeed, they need a permission letter from their parents to do so.

Backwards tradition. The whole idea that menstruation is unclean comes from the times before soap.

But this is not state-mandated in any way, as the article I link shows. Those girls are choosing to be delegated to the back.

TB, I agree that segregating those girls is crazy wrong for a number of reasons. It demonstrates the low status that women are given in Islam, and it's ridiculous.

However, I cannot agree with the article's conclusion that this is evidence of "sharia rule coming to the West!". Schools in Toronto trying to accomodate religion is not a new thing, it's an old thing!

This is not a new practice by schools, and it's not a new school board policy. This is a school which is not abiding by the Ontario Education Act, and given the recent local uproar (started by this article and others), it's pretty clear the problem is being exposed, not spreading.

How so? From what I can tell, they're being moved to the back by whoever is enforcing the religious rules at that school.

They are choosing to attend that prayer. They, in fact, had to get a permission slip signed so they could sit in the back.

It would be interesting to find out what would happen to them if they chose NOT to attend prayer and sit wherever they pleased (while being muslim.) There would be no sanctions by the school, certainly. What other threats they may face may come from their own families- and male family members.
