CPU and mobo

I'm buying a new CPU and motherboard next Friday. I have done a lot of research but it still doesn't convince me. A few weeks ago i replaced the video card in my AMD phenom II x6 1055t system from a Radeon 5750 1GB to a Radeon 6950 2GB. the performance increase was barely noticeable in dx11 titles such as Rift. some of the games i have run slower, such as cities XL, Crysis, and World of Warcraft. my question is, will a core i5 2500k with an Asus motherboard solve my problem? While i am in Rift, i get about 13fps in Meridian..

Check it for the CPU limit by changing the resolution up and down and seeing what happens to the framerate. If the framerate stays within a few percent at 640x480/800x600 as it does at much higher resolutions it is probably the CPU limit. Also look at benchmarks online of systems similar to yours vs what you are shopping for and see what games respond better to more cores vs games that respond better to fewer but faster cores.

in every resolution it's the same. from 1024x780 to 1960x1080. even if i force it to lower resolutions its the same.. and me with a 40" LED monitor thats just not cutting it. i read my video card can do some massive framerates in the games i have played based off of youtube videos. but anandtech says diffrent.

i want to know if its cost effective to switch from an amd 6 core to an intel 4 core for gaming. obviously i would keep my six core for apps like autocad and 3d modeling/photoshop.

oh yeah. vsync disabled, and enabled. there was a command line to take advantage of multipule cores but that only jumped it +2 fps for the most part. i know my cpu might be a year old but i was told a 6 core would be the best way to go in terms of future apps like autocad. i have since saved my amd system for just that.. autocad for school. i believe false advertising is everywhere and i just want to know what is good for gaming. the past years i have used amd has been disappointing.

is the i5 2500k worth it or should i spend the extra money for the i7 2600k?

i figure descent gamers are the ones to talk to since we've been playing since 1994. anandtech has biased reviews.

I have the Core I7 2600K and it blows Crysis 2 out of the water on my meager ATI 5830 1 gig.

the 5830 is a little less then what I got... different architecture.

I know my 5830 isn't tops but I don't play many FPS games that require a lot of power. I play racing games, Portal 2, HL2 and UT3. Crysis 2 I played just to see how it was. I'm running Win 7 64bit with 8 gigs ram and there isn't a game I haven't played that isn't maxed out on my 1680x1050 res.

did some test in crysis 2 and the unigine engine benchmark. everything stops at 70 in crysis 2.. unigine engine running about 12fps on 1080p as well as 1280, 1024, and 800. when i switch the direct x 9 it just crashes. i dont like how everything says they are optimized for multi core cpu's.. yet i bought one and its horrible. autocad runs fabulous. guess im just gonna have to shell out 290 dollars for something i should have gotten 2 weeks ago.

update: purchased a 750w power supply from a 550w from tiger direct. just made things quieter.

I paid $1100 CAN for my upgrade. I'm happy. It's not the top but it was my budget.

Did you install the dirextx9 binaries using their web installler

This is a requirement if you use CCCP Codec pack and assists with older games

I'm not looking to spend that much on a core i7. I thought about it, but decided against it because after 2012 i'll just have to upgrade again anyway. Hopefully cloud processing will take off by then (onlive). Probably gonna go with the core i5 2500k unlocked with the asus motherboard. I have the HIS iceq turbo 6950 2Gb already. i'm am planning on maybe crossfiring it with an OEM 5750 1GB i have. My local microcenter has the cpu and mobo for 290 dollars =]. it will be interesting to see how intel differs from 6 years of using AMD laptops in the military as well as my home gaming system.
