Windows 8

Post by thewolfe »

Has anyone tried Win 8? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516

I tried to install it in VirtualBox and can't get it to load.

I get "Windows Developer Preview"

"Computer needs restart please hold down the power button error code 0X00000 a that's all I can read.

Then I get a virtual box-guru meditation "critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped"

Also, can you suggest anther Virtual program to try?

Now only works with Win Pro or Ultimate. Use to be free for all versions.

Well if I'm reading the article correctly I can't install VM on the AMD machine I'm trying to install on. I ran the "Hardware Virtualization tool and it said..."no can do".

if its a recent amd cpu(2005 or later), you may have to enable the virtualization feature in your bios.

if you want to test a 64-bit Windows 8, you need to be running a 64-bit OS for your virtual machine

I was using the 32 bit. I ck my bios setting and see if I can figure anything out. Thanks

Didn't see anything that gave me a clue it may have something to do with virtualization.

run cpu-id.

you are looking for are the AMD-V instructions. If you don't have it, then you can't run windows 8.

It's a HP Pavillion p6100z running Win7 Home Premium. AMD Sempron LE-1300 2.30GHz w/ 2.25 GB RAM

It's one of my "test stuff" machines.

Not much chance of getting any MS hypervisors running on that. VMware might work but I don't recall whether I've heard of anyone successfully installing on that either.

It's ok, you're not missing much. Extremely mobile/tablet/app oriented. Pretty awkward on an normal desktop.

Well maybe I haven't given up yet. My main computer is running Win7 and has about 500GB of free space and will handle "visualization".

What's the downside of trying on my main machine?

VIRTUALIZATION

The version of windows 8 that is out is meant for developers to mess with(hence why its called "developer preview"), a lot of consumer aimed features are missing.

VirtualBox will probably eventually support Windows 8 without hardware virtualization too. Generally, I've only had very obscure things like hardware breakpoints and Linux kernel 2.2 break in VirtualBox without having hardware virtualization.

I agree, it's still in development so these issues with VirtualBox aren't a reason for alarm yet.

Corporations are most likely to steer clear of Windows 8. The Metro UI might work well in portables but not desktops. Waiting for my bioport installation and a gaming pod to come out before I upgrade again.

It's not all Metro UI - there are other things it does as well. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Server 8 is a lot more compelling, that said.

It hurts me to say that Apple seems to be the only one to get that an OS good for tablets isn't necessarily going to be good for desktops (and vice versa). Unfortunately, Apple's karma lately has been leaking like a sieve.
