Can I change the main User name?

A friend, upon setup misspelled his name so the main User folder is incorrect. Can he rename it? I know rename is not an option when right-clicking.

I don’t know if you can change the name the PC is registered to, but you can change any of the “User” names under account control…in Control Panel.

Found this but wow. My friends not to computer savvy. His choice if he wants to mess with it.

I’m pretty sure you only need to do all of that if the guy has used his account, and you don’t want to lose any stuff.

If it’s a new account, just add an Admin user then use that one to change the other.

I think you may be able to change the name without an Admin account, if none exists.

You will get a warning that encrypted stuff and such will be lost.

Do this if you don’t need to save the old account…(or you can keep it)

1. Add an Admin account. (or skip to #2 if one already exists)
2. Log off the user account you want to change.
3. Log back in as the Admin.
4. Creat a new “USER” account with the proper spelling.
5. Delete the old account, if you don’t need it.


You can save the theme if you want. But a new account won’t be personalized to any degree (unless the guy used the misspelled account)

You cannot change the name of an account you are logged in as.

This may not be as true as you think I have done it but it involve a lot of reg editing. Although it hasn't been since Windows 2000 since I have done it. I would never recommend to it any one unless you know your regedit.

It's easier to just add and delete the User, but the Machine name will stay the same until you change that also,
