Bands to check out if you like game music

Post by Alter-Fox »

Since this isn't about my work specifically (though I definitely want to be on this list!) I decided it would fit better in the general forum than in the gallery. If board administration disagrees, I have no problem with it being moved.

So yeah, this is a list of bands and other artists whose work is especially similar to (or at least has a noticable influence) from video game music. If you think of one I didn't, feel free to post it, but just remember that this isn't just a thread about bands you like. You can make your own thread for that :P.

I tried to find at least ten for this initial post.

Zsolt Marx http://soundcloud.com/zmarx
He's actually a game composer who seems to specialize in racing games, but he does a lot of original work too. Most of it is instrumental but there is the occasional vocal track in there -- and he does insane awesome silly things with his vocals. Also, apparently that's his real name.

Verran http://soundcloud.com/verran
Many of you probably know him. His work isn't too similar to... anything, really, but you can definitely hear the video game influence in there.

R.a.M. Land http://www.ramland.co.cc/
aka Pumo. Need I go on?

Sunspire http://www.sunspire-records.com/
Similar to Pumo's work. He's done some Descent remixes, but it's his original songs that really shine.

Daft Punk http://soundcloud.com/user7809901
Again, do I really need to explain?

Skinny Puppy http://soundcloud.com/officialskinnypuppy
If you're a fan of the OPL2 versions of the Descent midi music, you should definitely check them out. Their 'normal' style of music is a lot better, and ironically a lot more Descent-like, than the cliches they fell into when they actually did music for Descent.

Julien-k http://soundcloud.com/officialjulienk, http://www.myspace.com/julienk
Their first release was part of a major game title, and since then their music has been heavily game-influenced -- in some songs more prominently than others. At least to me, a lot of the music sounds like the Descent 1 midi soundtrack and the D2 redbook as well.

CFX http://soundcloud.com/cfx-music
You may know him from a particularly great remix (and if you haven't heard the remix, go listen to it right now; I can wait). His original work is also heavily game-influenced and definitely the better for it.

BlackHole http://blackhole12.newgrounds.com/
Entirely instrumental. It's not nearly as dark as I usually like my music so the fact that even I like it says good things too. If I remember correctly he was a member of the old planetdescent and also sectorgame, but he never came back to this community as far as I know.

SupraDarky http://supradarky.newgrounds.com/
Despite the name most of his work is about as "dark" as BlackHole. Still really good stuff, and definitely game-influenced. Like BlackHole, the games that influenced it appear to be different kinds of games than the other people on this list.
Ship's cat, MPSV Iberia: beware of cat.

Beware my original music, at http://soundcloud.com/snowfoxden.
