External HD woes

Post by Birdseye »

I've tried 2 different USB 2.0 HD ensclosures, and neither installed correctly and said they had an error. The HD inside works fine (checked) but neither drive will work... running XP on a dell inspiron 5150

anyone got any clue what to do?

What is the error and do you have USB 2 enabled in BIOS?

pretty strange. My guess would be that you need to upgrade your USB drivers.

When you go to windows update is anything listed for it in the drivers section?

If not, check the device manager for what type of controller it is. maybe you can get newer drivers from the manufacturer (VIA, SIS, Intel etc.)

latest windows update stuff, reinstalled my factory dell drivers
reinstalled the device just now, got:
device cannot start (code 10)

it sat on the final install file, usbstor.sys for a long time before bringing the error up. file in system32\drivers dir

BIOS issue is a possibility, I guess. You ever flash the BIOS on that thing?

Also, I noticed that you reinstalled the factory drivers. Have you tried any updated drivers(as Stress mentioned)?
