Woman with double-mastectomy swims topless
Came across this article on ESPN recently, and thought it might be some interesting E&C fodder: Swimming Upstream, about a woman with both breasts removed swimming topless.
...Thoughts?
...Thoughts?

Fine by me. Not sure why this is in E&C.

What's the big deal? She'd look like a man with no nipples or pecks. The scars might be a little nasty looking though.

Re: Woman with double-mastectomy swims topless
There's a picture of her topless near the bottom of that article, and yeah, I don't think I'd do so much as a double-take if I saw her at a pool.

Yeah, I think there is a solid case for the idea of "If she hadn't said anything, probably nobody would have noticed.".

The lack of nipples might cause a double take though.

Re: Woman with double-mastectomy swims topless
Kinda weird that they open the article with her sexual orientation, what's that got to do with the story? And then later, this:
"The cons: This is not about swimming. This is about a lesbian trying to make a statement."
Is this some kindof "All feminists are lesbians, real women are quiet" bull★■◆●? I guess it is a sports network, with all that that implies.
That said, this story is pretty cool, makes you think eh?
Taken to another level, what if someone had no genitals or anus (due to some crazy accident)? I gotta admit i'm getting this whole uncanny valley vibe from the whole thing, but i'm writing it off as some kinda innate transphobia on my part. I mean - it's somewhat doing my head in to think of an adult cis-woman with a lack of upperbody erogenous taboo, i've never considered that before (the lack of taboo angle). ie: Getting offended if someone stares at her chest, will that still be a thing?
Trans-men who've had top surgery (ppl born as biologically female, who have gender transitioned to be male, and had their breasts surgically removed to create a more male chest) are allowed to swim anywhere with no problems, since they generally pass as male without a second thought. I think it's because the woman in this story still perfectly identifies as a cis-woman, that there is a problem. Coz ppl are thinking "woman = breasts = cover it up", but that's not the case, and it's hard to get around that mentally.

heh
yeah as soon as a story starts off with someone's sexual orientation, I lose interest quite quickly. As far as someone with a double mastectomy doing such a thing; neat.

Feminists almost have to be lesbian, because anyone who marries them and puts up with their issues is obviously a pussy.

Um, Google "mastectomy scars photos". You might not think that way after taking a gander at a few of the results.

Interesting, now you have me curious. Would they tend to pick, based on how they're dressed? Or do they typically go to the men's, for purely logistical purposes? Or is there not a norm, and it varies widely from person to person?CUDA wrote:...which brings up the whole issue of a hermaphrodite. Men's or Women's locker room??
Hehe. That's actually what I was thinking might be E&C material here. Why are women's breasts treated so differently from men's? (I know there are various reasons, cultural and religious and practical, but I'm curious to see what the crowd here thinks.)Spidey wrote:I think flat chested women should run around topless.

Re: Woman with double-mastectomy swims topless
afaik there's no such thing as human hermaphrodites. Some more accurate words to chose from are intersexed, transgendered, androgynous, etc.Foil wrote:Interesting, now you have me curious. And yeah, all of the above groups can get harassed for someone subjectively thinking they have picked "the wrong room". Sometimes they themselves do not know which room they should go into.
It's taken for granted by cis-gendered people. But when you realise that people get harassed, even legally, and even attacked physically coz someone like Thorne thinks they are in the wrong room - You can see why it's serious. I've heard from a lot of trans ppl that they simply avoid public toilets whenever they can, because it can be too dangerous a gamble, and a confined space. You never know what kindof psycho could be in there, ready to crack.
And cis-gendered people really do...

...Lose their ★■◆● over this kinda stuff.
YEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
But no they really do, like i said people are routinely verbally abused and even physically attacked, legal threats are common. People just lose it, as if it's a violation like you have walked in on them naked, it's pretty daft when you think about it.
It's kinda weird to need to affirm a (binary) gender identity everytime you goto a public restroom, like it's a necessary pre-requisite for entry.
A solution is unisex toilets.

Maybe you should raise the bar and try to stick to facts instead of venturing into fiction, eh Roid?Roid 'raising the bar' wrote:But when you realise that people get harassed, even legally, and even attacked physically coz someone like Thorne thinks they are in the wrong room - You can see why it's serious.

i'm pretty confident their attackers are universally homophobes and/or transphobes.

Re: Woman with double-mastectomy swims topless
So you label someone a "homophobe", and then link them to violence by association with this label? I guess as long as you're "confident", ya dumb son of a ★■◆●.
Your biggest problem, Roid, which may be shared by any number of folks on here, is that you don't seem to be able to grasp me. I apparently defy various assumptions and generalizations that you hold about people you disagree with, so whenever I make a statement of intent, belief, or feeling which goes against what you think you know about me (based on your assumptions) you apparently just dismiss it.
So let's go right back to what I just said, before you explained how confident you were--stop making ★■◆● up just because it's affirmed by your imagination and helps you in your little piss-ant war with anyone who holds to any form of moral standard.
That's the bar raised.

Re: Woman with double-mastectomy swims topless
three things come to mind right now:
WOW.
thank god for the ignore feature.
and:
If it were allowed, i'd let loose about twenty seven thoughts right now. but I have to behave here.

What can you do? Bull**** retorts and threats of 27 thoughts ain't much to go on. I'll say it once more, so you don't think your antics have in any way answered it--stick to the facts. You could get into politics with that nonsense.
