mageia 2 test run: A lightweight KDE DE?

Post by Isaac »

Efficiency
Just testing it out on the live disk and seems to be really light weight compared to the last KDE desktop I ran on my 1.6Ghz 1GB netbook.

GUI
The desktop effects aren't flashy, but they do include a useful window tiling feature I like, much like the Grid effect in compiz. Probably is compiz... can't find it though. Overall, the GUI feels smooth and useful. KDE is pretty good at that.

Software
The repos seem to be a little thin. If I did make a switch to Mageia 2, I'd have to find a way to thicken them out. I mean, even Puppy Linux has Inkscape. So should Mageia. I also tried to find GNUcash, a nice accounting program I heavily use. It's not in the default repos either.

I guess I could compile stuff, but I like repos. I'm sure there's extra ones I could add.

How I heard of Mageia
I heard about Mageia on reddit, but I had to try it after I saw it beat Ubuntu on the "last month" chart.

Conclusion
Anyway. I'm happy on Linux Mint 13 Mate. I don't think I'll be switching yet. At least not tonight.
