According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi‘i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax. Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not.”

I'll say one thing, IF, they start tearing those pyramids down, that whole side of the world has gone crazy.

Can't say they won't do it- look at what happened to the ancient buddhist statues in Afghanistan.

I don't doubt that the clerics would have them torn down if they were given authority.
But I don't see it happening, simply because the pyramids are a huge source of tourism revenue.

Yeah, Egypt has a huge tourism industry so harming the pyramids would be idiotic and pretty much every sane Egyptian (who make up the overwhelming majority) understands that. And I remember during the riots a large number of people formed a human barricade around the Cairo museum to protect it from looters, if a cleric wanted to try this they would probably have to do it over the dead bodies of a group a thousand times that size. I can't see it happening.

Do they care? The Muslim Brotherhood sees Americans and Europeans as evil infidels, so why take our money just to look at pagan monuments if they can do one better and keep those evil infidels from even tramping on and defiling native Egyptian soil?Foil wrote:I don't doubt that the clerics would have them torn down if they were given authority.

The Taliban blew up the Buddhas of Bamiyan without a second thought. I'm sure those statues could have brought in tourist dollars too, if they had been left standing and Afghanistan eventually became peaceful. Did they care? Nope.

TC, as Krom alluded to, there are more than enough Egyptians who do care. The clerics in Egypt are not nearly as powerful as the Taliban in Afghanistan.

You know, I really hope so Foil. I hate to see historic treasures destroyed because it's some affront to someone else's religion. Islam is especially intolerant. What a waste.

So you don't see any difference between a few fringe clerics in Egypt saying that they want to destroy the pyramids, and the actual government of Afghanistan at the time going ahead with destroying the statues?

Try keeping up with current events instead of making idiotic replies. I'm sure the vast majority of the residents in Mali didn't want this to happen as the UNESCO World Heritage site also brings in tourist revenue:Ferno wrote:whee ding ding ding ding, more conspiracy nonsense!
"Islamist militants destroyed two tombs on Tuesday at the famous 14th century Djingareyber mosque in Timbuktu, classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site, residents said."
"They have destroyed at least eight of 16 listed mausoleums in the city, together with a number of tombs and a sacred door at Sidi Yahya mosque, in their campaign to erase traces of what they regard as un-Islamic idolatry."
"According to UNESCO, Djingareyber, together with the Sankore and Sidi Yahia mosques, are known as the three great mosques of the city. Djingareyber was built by the sultan Kankan Moussa after his return in 1325 from a pilgrimage to Mecca"

It only takes a few determined idiots with religious fervor to destroy something.

no comparison whatsoever between the Pyramids and those massive Buddha statues. Hell, with modern technology, you could rebuild those pyramids in a matter of weeks.............

stupid comparison, not even worth a discussion.
maybe if you actually found something of SUBSTANCE and WORTHWHILE, I would engage you. but not with this trash you keep spewing. instead we get to see topic after another of "OH MAH GAWD DA MOSLEMS ARE GONNA DESTROY EVERYTHING!!!111' from you. every. single. time. and it's been this way.. for the past. five. YEARS.
there are two other people who actually care enough to comment. two.
the rest of us.. do not care. at all.
so i'll say it again. you have no argument, all you have is hyperbole, overblown fear mongering and mental masturbation. and it happens almost twice a week.
I'd be really surprised if you actually posted something other than how the ebul moslems are gonna git us all. But you're gonna continue to spam us with the ebul moslems.
and it's because of you that most of the old posters have left. because they can't stand seeing this stuff. So if anyone craps out useless commentary all the time, it's you. Now go away.
and just for you...

I think the international community should punish extreme behavior by abbreviating these folk's names. "Today Al again called on M&M to destroy the pyramids." You act up, you don't get a long impressive name--you are now "bob".

Yep. It appears that the Egyptians think we meddled in their recent elections and blame the U.S. for messing with the results. Hillary Clinton didn't get a very "diplomatic" welcome during her recent visit.

Re: Destroy Egypt's Pyramids? Yes we can!
Out of curiosity Foil, what should we do about a bunch of religious fundamentalist nutcases trying to destroy national treasures all over Africa and other parts of the world? Are we to become the world's antiquities police? Do we even have the resources and money to even carry this off? And remember, Americans and the especially the British, were raiding and desecrating Egyptian tombs back in the 19th and 20th centuries all in the name of "protecting those precious artifacts for museums and collectors".
Don't get me wrong, Al Qaeda and any other fundamentalist group destroying something because it's blasphemous to their religion is the stupidest idea on earth. People can be so shortsighted and idiotic sometimes, usually by doing something in the name of their "God". But what resources do we put towards preventing it? We could use the U.N., "cough, cough", but a lot of Americans think that the organization is either too wimpy to have any effect, or too strong and too big a threat to American exceptionalism to even consider working with.
