Nice, Roid. Electric vehicles are cool and will kill off good old gas powered cars.
My big problem is, I really prefer the way older cars looked, from the 60’s to 70’s. I’m stuck in an era I never even lived in.

Ah, that 280Z (top pic) brings back some memories. My first car was a green '74 260Z (manual, of course!), and I loved that thing.
Re: car thread: cars you wouldn't mind owning
I wonder how expensive those little datsuns are to keep on the road.
Check out that rear:
Otherwise, they're pretty cheap and I like the way they look.

Re: car thread: cars you wouldn't mind owning
The most expensive thing about my old 260Z was maintaining the dual carburetors. I didn't know enough to do it myself, and being a poor college student, didn't have the $$ to do it.
Re: car thread: cars you wouldn't mind owning
Hmm, well i guess the best of both worlds could be achieved if the car's weight and size were more efficiently used: Retain the shape and make the entire car outof solid battery . There's talk of energy storing paneling, but it's all still a while off imho.Isaac wrote:Nice, Roid. Electric vehicles are cool and will kill off good old gas powered cars.

Since the shape would be retained, i guess aerodynamics considerations would have to ...

Here's another I wouldn't mind having as a working replica. I believe this photo is one of the world's oldest running cars:
Required: owner must rock a top hat and start participating in parades in town.
Though, it's more lawnmower than it is "car". edit: actually, it's more sled than it is car.

Eclectic cars people! Very interesting to see a Ford Escort listed here! There are still quite a few old Escorts knocking around Christchurch, in various stages of decomposition.
Here's my current wagon:
I have run this beast for over 7 years, and spent over $60,000 on it since I bought it. There's always another thousand to spend on a 928. "There is no such thing as a budget 928, only a budget FOR a 928".
And I just bought one of these in bits, it's been off the road for 21 years: Left Hand Drive 1969 Porsche 911S in Black-on-Black, a very rare original colour combination:
This car won't be ready for paint until February next year, but it should be back on the road, fully restored from bare metal by this time next year.
In January I'm going over tothe UK to pick up two of the 2005 997, 911S:
They are insanely cheap in the UK, with models as low as 18,000 pounds, while they sell at over $75,000 here. So I will do one trip, sell one of the cars, t make the first one almost free. I will rinse and repeat until I have a 997 Turbo for free.

The Island Car! It can do 1000 kph easy, with the help of red booster pads; It does incredible smooth jumps over open ocean, no trouble with loop-de-loops, and seems to operate as though the gravity of earth was only a fraction of its real value! And it skids like nobody's business!

There are a lot of neat supercars. The one that stands out to me is the Ford GT90. As far as regular cars it would be the modern Chevy Camero for a sports car, or the Volkswagen Jetta because I think pretty highly of Volkswagen. What I really want right now though, is a full or mid-size pickup with a cab, and a motorcycle for nice weather.

Car dealer in Portugal commits murder...
Rusty barn? sure!
Covers? Nah! Cars are metal. They can withstand all water damage and drippy rust falling from the ceiling.
Nah... I don't need to roll the windows up. Dust and rust particles don't ever enter the cars, because of their shape...
Sweet... well... I'mma just weld these doors shut, otherwise something bad might happen to them.
God! Why didn't the owners cover the freaking cars!??!!??! Heart breaking. Some of their windows have been rolled down! Some seem to have water damage!
I have 180 amazing cars... Where to keep them? The owner of the cars was a car dealer in the 1970s and 1980s, and decided to save the more interesting cars that came through his doors. When the barn was full, he padlocked and "soldered" the doors shut. (Perhaps welding was too permanent.)

Back in the days some friends and I rebuilt a 1967 911 to our own specs (w/ an 3.2l engine from the 80s, built our own carbs for it too. Only the hull was original.) -- most brutal and fun car I have ever drivenMobius wrote:And I just bought one of these in bits, it's been off the road for 21 years: Left Hand Drive 1969 Porsche 911S in Black-on-Black, a very rare original colour combination:

Re: car thread: cars you wouldn't mind owning
The 993 Carerra RS is a car I've actually driven at the track, as my guys run one. It's an awful car compared to modern 911s. Seriously. It is far too small, is very very tricky at the limit, and wants to swap ends if you get on the gas too soon. Very exciting as a track day car, but not much good as a road car:the suspension is too hard, and it's no fun having a road car which you have to be very careful with, lest the vehicle gain the upper hand.Grendel wrote: Meh. If you want a fun Porsche, try to find a 993 Carrera RS (a 4S would be an ok alternative.)
Plus, I find the 993 shape to be the worst-looking of any 911 design.
Then there's that whole air-cooled engine thing, which I find to be a total wank.
The fact of the matter is that by every standard you can think of, the newer 911s are better than the old ones. The ONLY standard this isn't true of is the "can I fit between those two cars?" test. I have driven a lot of Porsches and 911s over the years, from early 911s, to race-prepped 400+ BHP 964, to late model GT3 road cars and a 997 GT3 cup car. One thing I can tell you is that if you REALLY enjoy the actual driving, then there is no question in the matter: newer is better.
I have not yet driven a 991 Carrera S, but I can guarantee you it is leaps and bounds ahead of the 997.
Thorne - I forgot to list my other toy!
Re: car thread: cars you wouldn't mind owning
I like a challenge and I like to drive on the edge -- 993RS is perfect for it. There're reasons why more regular Porsches are regarded as mid-live-crisis cars in germany If you want a "road car" I would suggest a Bently, most comfy car I've ever driven -- it's really something. Almost like driving around w/ your living room and it really moves when you step on it.Mobius wrote:It is far too small, is very very tricky at the limit, and wants to swap ends if you get on the gas too soon. Looks are far down the line of importance if the performance is right. Just look at the Veyron, UGLY as hell IMO but it's still one of the best cars ever build. A Smart Roadster is a real looker, but does it deliver ? My personal favorite of the Porsche shapes is the original 911. Would never want to own one in its original state tho, too unsafe IMO.Mobius wrote:Plus, I find the 993 shape to be the worst-looking of any 911 design.
Says the guy who is restoring a 1969 Porsche 911S Again, if the performance is right... Plus, I like to work on my engines, way easier w/ the coolant out of the way.Mobius wrote:Then there's that whole air-cooled engine thing, which I find to be a total wank.
