That has me cracking up, mostly because a good friend of mine is a huge Bears fan, and a professional Jay Cutler apologist. Every time Cutler blows up / cries / mopes, he has another reason it's justified/harmless/right-for-the-team.

Jay is a great quarterback when he has coverage. There is no reason he should be getting sacked 6 times per game. The Bears offensive line sucks. Did you see that pre-season game against the Packers where 6 linemen couldn't stop 4 defenders from reaching Cutler? Idiots.

Sorry, it's not just his o-line (which, by the way, has been somewhat better this year), and he's not just "a little emotional". He's a wreck who mopes around and blames everyone except himself, throws fits during and after games, is a jerk to his own teammates, and does things like grabbing his crotch and saying "suck it" to opponents.

Teams put up with Cutler, because he has the prototypical "strong arm", and sometimes has really good games. As and for "great quarterback"? Take a look at his stats over the years! He's a barely-average quarterback, whether you look at passer rating or QBR or almost any other stat. In his best year, he barely cracked the top half of the league, and in his worst year, he was setting records for throwing interceptions. Sorry, there's no way in hell I'd want him on my team, even if he is having a decent season right now (which is still more due to the insanely-good Chicago defense than Cutler).

OK ok, I know I'm making excuses. I think this is just my reaction from the Rex Grossman years (you know the guy whose passing record left him equally likely to throw an interception as a touchdown?). I think I'm cool with Cutler being moody and average because it makes me less emotional during the game, haha. Fewer surprises. Watching Grossman over the years was nerve-wreaking. Every time the ball went up I winced.

Hell, at this point, the only thing I'm hoping for this season is that we continue to tank and Reid finally gets his ass fired. I've seen people from other cities saying, "We'd gladly take a coach with his record" for years, but they don't have to live with him. The man is an abysmal game-day coach.

Gotta disagree with you, too, TG. IMO, Reid has done an incredible job with the players he's had. He kept the Eagles at or near the top of the NFC for a very long time, particularly with all the divas and whiners and distractions they've had. Personally, I think if they get rid of Reid, they'll end up like Dallas, endlessly flipping through mediocre coaches trying to find someone to get them back on top.

...That said, I'll give you that Reid is looking pretty sad/desperate lately. It'll be interesting if they end up with a winning record and make it to the playoffs - how far would they need to go in order for him to save his job?

I think the Eagles would have to at least win a playoff game, and even that wouldn't be a guarantee; making a deep run would really be the only thing that would definitely let him back. If they miss the playoffs, or even make it but get bounced in the first round, he's gone.

As I said, I've seen many people over the years make a statement similar to yours re: the Eagles' success, but it has always rung extremely hollow to me. All things being equal, I think I would rather have a team that's just plain mediocre for a long time, so that I don't have to really care about them, than one which keeps teasing me with deep runs, only to trip over its own feet in the end. (Hell, you know how much losing three NFC championship games in a row hurts?) The truth is, even during our best years, we were always guaranteed a few losses per season that solely came down to Reid being woefully out-coached on gameday...and that was definitely the case for the Superbowl. For many years, Reid had the talent in place in his coaching staff and players to generally mask those concerns, but now that we don't, I think you're seeing it laid bare during this stinker of a season. There's also the fact that Reid is in charge of most football-related decisions, and while he's made a few fantastic draft choices, he's also made some extremely questionable personnel moves; this can be seen most recently on the coaching side with the whole Juan Castillo debacle.

So yeah...for anyone out there thinking that they'd love a coach like Reid in their city, I'd simply say to be careful what you wish for.

Speaking as a guy whose team has been "mediocre for a long time": Eagles fans are spoiled. Trust me, you don't want the mediocre team. It sounds better than heartbreaking defeats in the playoffs... but it's not, not even close.

Speaking as a guy whose team has been "mediocre for a long time": Eagles fans are spoiled. Trust me, you don't want the mediocre team. It sounds better than heartbreaking defeats in the playoffs... but it's not, not even close.

Oh, we're not all that spoiled...or rather, the majority of the fanbase isn't. The franchise was absolutely abysmal through the majority of the 80s and 90s (Rich Kotite...enough said). Granted, this was before my time as a fan, but I've experienced the same thing with other teams. All things being equal, the teams which have made it close to the end yet screwed up somehow have taken far more years off my life than the just-plain-mediocre ones.
