Can't get Descent 3 to run on Windows 7 (64 bit)

When attempting to run i get this nasty lil error:

Yes, in fact i read through all of it before making an account. None of the tips helped any :<

the geforce is selected on the video tab?

Under your power options in the control panel, switch it to high performance before testing

Switching CPU integrated Video and Discreet Video --- ruroh!

then you need to assign the Geforce GT 540M to run discreetly for Main.exe instead of autodetect

adjusting settings to Descent3.exe has no effect on the game(main.exe) itself since Descent3.exe is just a launcher program, you can right click on the desktop shortcut and run with NVIDA to get your D3 launcher profile set(or change default)

for Main.exe profile that you created

option #2 - "Select the preferred graphics processor for this game"

choose Use NVIDIA high performance processor

create another custom profile for Descent3.exe(the launcher program) set same graphic card option (this way it detects the right card every time you mess with custom switches)

Unfortunetly my system doesn't give me that option in the nVidia control panel.

I think I may just be one of the few who can't run this game.

The option is still not available. It may be because my computer is a 'custom' build from Xotic and their software could be proprietary.

Would using Nvidia Inspector work for doing this instead of the Nvidia Control Panel BUBBALOU or Krom?

The latest optimus compatible reference drivers from nvidia should work regardless of who built the computer. (Remember nvidia built the GPU and designed optimus, so while it is proprietary, it is proprietary to nvidia not the company that assembled the laptop.)

Can we get the exact model of this laptop, since your laptops vendor has a crap-ton of different models

If its not displayed on the back cover(bottom) of the laptop, then it will be under the battery in the battery compartment !

Your never going to believe how easy that was to fix......


COPY the game files from 'program files'

PASTE the entire folder into 'C:/'

that gets rid of the access violation.

Anyway, Time to get to some gaming.

Windows 7 can be touchy about permissions and the like for stuff in Program Files/(x86), you should have used the default directory for installing D3 (C:\Games\Descent3).
