Fun. I don't understand though. He was holding a sword and you said in that scenario 'adults would throw heavy things at the attacker and jump him'...
Instead they had a three hour standoff at gunpoint and called in a crisis intervention team to deal with it!
Bunch of wimpy cops out there huh?

the naked thing throws people off(plus, the report of the gun present contributed, no doubt).

Kind of hard for the heavy-object-throwers to claim they were afraid of a gun and not the sword unless you think the naked guy had an AR-15 sized sphincter.callmeslick wrote:Will Robinson wrote:Fun. like I said, naked people tend towards being unpredictable. It throws response off, especially from police.

Maybe the police fear a sword-carrying charging naked man more than a clothed gun-toting one. Isn't a moving target harder to hit with a pistol in a rushed reaction? In the games Spec Ops, The Line and Far Cry 3, there are characters that charge at you with the intention of performing close range attacks. I find it harder to hit them with my gun than the bozos standing at a distance and firing at me with their guns.

Re: covering the bases, for Will
filling sword-wielding nude folks with bullets(which the cops could have none easily, I suspect) makes for bad press.
Had this guy been charging around amongst civilians, I'll bet he'd have been neutralized, and/or neutered, quickly.

My take on this is, the first school massacre after all the guns are confiscated will be by a naked guy with a sword. While comrade slick seems to think unarmed civilians would tackle the guy when armed police would not, I shudder to think of the results.

Wood, I think in the case of a naked guy with a sword, someone could throw a chair at him or something to distract him while someone else tackles him. When holding a gun, you don't dare do anything.
Having more weapons in the hands of everyone will not solve the issue. My 3 cents.

Dunno Merlin, seem way back before guns were invented and the sword was the sidearm of choice, I don't recall many stories of unarmed peasants jumping sword carrying men. If the teachers could do a bums rush maybe they could tackle him. OTOH, is the guy with the sword got a quick swipe in and beheaded the first one, I suspect the rest of the peas...er teachers would fall back. Lets face it, in this day and age if the school system is to peasant like to allow teachers to train with and carry firearms, then they will be at the mercy of any madman who enters the building.

Slick, I'm 42 so I think I'm old enough. I guess I give my fellow man the benefit of the doubt that they would try something to protect the kids. Kinda like what they did in 2001 in the plane that crashed because the passengers decided to take down the terrorists before they could hit another building.

Re: covering the bases, for Will
Perhaps you are confused about "experiencing" and reading recorded history. Do try and read, say, something about feudal japan. See how many stories you can dig up about a group of unarmed peasants attacking even a single samurai. I'd be interested to learn of the results.callmeslick wrote:I'm thinking that you are nowhere near old enough to have ever experienced such stuff, and are simply making stuff up to suit your point of view.woodchip wrote:Dunno Merlin, seem way back before guns were invented and the sword was the sidearm of choice, I don't recall many stories of unarmed peasants jumping sword carrying men.

Google sword wielding man and you'll get a boatload of hits. Swords seem to be the next weapon du jour for crazy people to use. Hmmm. I wonder if they had crazy people doing mass sword killings during the Middle and Bronze Ages? Prolly.

Re: covering the bases, for Will
I really doubt we can compare today's retards with Japanese Samurai warriors. I would at least try to do something to protect others. I wouldn't blindly go at him with nothing cause I know that would be stupid but if I was able to pick up a small table or chair and throw it at him and jump him and then I'm sure others would follow seeing I created a distraction.
Just figuring people wouldn't stand around and watch others get killed. But I guess I'm wrong in thinking people care about others.
Carry on.

Well one thing is for sure, you wont see anyone in Congress trying to ban swords until the day after the formation of the National Sword Association and it starts donating to one party or the other exclusively....
( That gives me an idea. How about a new law that says you can only donate to both party's equally. As hard as they find it to refuse cash I bet they would vote for it! )

How about a new law that says if they don't get any work done by the end of the year, they're automatically fired and they have to give back ALL their paychecks for deposit to the government coffers. Will Robinson wrote:( That gives me an idea. At least in Far Cry 3 you can make them back off pretty quickly by selecting the flame thrower...But in real life that isn't exactly an option the police could get away with.tunnelcat wrote:Maybe the police fear a sword-carrying charging naked man more than a clothed gun-toting one. Mmmmmmmmmmm, toasted chargers!
I hate the ones in Spec Ops. They really come at you if you don't notice them right away and then they'll slice and dice you faster than you can say AHHHHHHHHHHHHH........................................!

Never played that series, so I can't comment. I really hated those mutant trigens in the first Far Cry though. You'd open a door and they lunge out at you from the dark. Damn near soiled my drawers a couple of times. Almost as bad as creeping through a dark duct in Half-Life and having a head crab fall on you unexpectedly.
