Just when you think you know the original Transformers. Now I have seen this in over 13 years and I just got back into it. I bought all 3 seasons, and the 4th season came with it. One of the DVDs they give you is special features DVD. I've browsed through it, and saw Transformers that where unfamiliar to me. I didn't understand why that was on there.

I did some research on it, and I discovered the original Transformers never ended with the 4th season. Matter of fact the 4th season in Japan is completely different from the US version. Instead of 4 episodes they have 36 episodes. From what I understand their 4th season is called Transformers Headmasters. After that it's Transformers Masterforce which is the 5th season according to a few websites. Next is Transformers Victory which is the 6th season accordantly to some websites again. There was one more called Transformers Zone. Zone was only 1 animated episode, but it continued in manga form. Just when you think you know every thing.

You know, Transformers really passed me by back in the 1980s. I don't know why, but I had no memories of Transformers or Thundercats or even G.I. Joe. Ninja Turtles was the first one I can actually remember watching religiously.

A couple years ago, however, I had the chance to see the Transformers movie. I watched Beast Wars a lot and knew, from that, the general concept of the original show. That movie was great though. Very kinetic animation, great voices, exciting action, and that wonderful hair band soundtrack. I guess seeing it at an older age allowed me to circumvent the trauma of Optimus Prime dying though, hehe.

It's a shame what they've done with the series lately. Armada and Energon are just awful. Even in a genre known for its stilted animation, these two shows are so poorly animated, it's painful to watch.

I remember crying my little 8 year old eyes out every time I saw Optimus Prime die in that movie.

I watched transformers almost religiously as a kid. When I think back on my youth, the toys I miss playing with the most are my transformers. I had so many of them. I had all the jets except Starscream, all the cassette tapes, all the original autobots except Optimus, etc. Never did manage to get ahold of a Megatron tho.

I would build autobot and decepticon city out of cardboard boxes and just play for hours and hours. Oh man, those were some good times...

Btw, whose the leader of the Autobots in season 4? Optimus of Rodimus? And is Galvatron still insane? Did the decepticons ever move off Char? Any of the old Autobots or Decepticons make meaningful contributions?

Optimus Prime dying in the movie was very traumatic for me. In some ways it was kinda like watching your father die. Of course you get over it when you're older and have a better understanding of reality

Transformers the Movie was the very first movie I can remember seeing in the theater. I belonged to the fanclub and that sort of thing. Was an official honorary Autobot

To a 6 year old though, that was special. I managed to collect most of the action figures. I regret that the majority of my collection no longer exists due to youthful hijinks

What I wouldn't give to have all of those back...

Used to have some epic battles with those guys. The crown jewels of my collection other then all the original figures were assembling virtually all of the Transformers that transformed into a much larger more powerful being. I loved those things...

In related Transformer news there has been rumblings in Hollywood since the middle of last year that a Transformersâ?¢ live action movie is in the works and is tentatively slated to be released in 2005 (Only speculation ATM). All the popular characters are in the works to be brought to life using the latest technology. If they do it right, which might be a big IF, but.....based on a lot of the stuff we've seen that they can do with special FX, if they do it right it has the potential to be really good.

Hey folks, Harry here with some quotes from an interview that Tom DeSanto did for DREAMWATCH magazine (Pick It Up Now), and the man is a yapping about TRANSFORMERS which he's helping to adapt as Producer (alongside Don Murphy) into a badass Autobot / Decepticon film. In the piece he talks about going for that 1980's film homage feel... I believe the images he's thinking of are things like the look on Elliot's face as they take-off on the bicycles... or the look on Christian Bale's face as the Cadillacs of the Sky tip their wings in EMPIRE OF THE SUN... These were not "annoying kids," but young people... Kids that were profoundly affected by what they were witnessing and through filmic empathy were passing on the awe of those moments to us out in the audience... involving us through them. I'm VERY confident that Tom DeSanto will be blowing our minds with TRANSFORMERS... Here ya go...

Just picked up the new issue of Dreamwatch which has an interview with Tom DeSanto talking about his plans for Transformers and claiming he's going to do for it what he did for X-Men.

Among other stuff he says?

"There's no better mythology to bring to the big screen than Transformers. Transformers has got great characters and created an iconic world, and the mythology still resonates with people 20 years after it was launched. Even though they're robots the characters have a lot of personality and a lot of heart and people still care about them. That's a great thing."

"The plan with the movie is that it will combine live action with CGI. I think it's going to be something the audience has never seen before. In all the years of movie-making, I don't think the image of a truck transforming into a 20-foot tall robot has ever been captured on screen. I also want to make a film that's a homage to 1980s movies and gets back to the sense of wonder that Hollywood has lost over the years. It will have those Spielberg-ian moments where you have the push-in on the wide-eyed kid and you feel like you're 10 years old even if you're 35. That's the energy I want to go for."

"Just like with X-Men I want to get to the core of what makes Transformers great. We're going to get back to the heart of what Transformers is and distill that into a movie."

DeSanto says that the film will be based on Generation One and set on Earth and that he's been rewatching all the cartoons and reading all the comics.

Going by his contribution to X-Men I reckon that DeSanto could be the guy to pull this off as he really seems to understand that cartoon and comic fans want films that are faithful to their source. Still, the talk of making it very 1980s is a bit worrying - I just hope there's NOT an annoying cute kid getting in the way of some hardcore metal-mashing action.

oh, and Tiger, you never heard of the Headmasters? If I remember right, the action figures were the ones that had those little tiny transformers that transformed into the head of a larger robot. The larger robot turned into something like a car, or jet, or whatnot that the smaller one drove. They were pretty neat

The thing is I really donâ??t remember a whole about the Headmasters toys. I can kind of recall a giant robot head from back then but thatâ??s it.

yeah i know about the jap transformers cause i think it was after seasion 3 they where loosting there hipe so they tryed to do the head masters to get them going agen but they failed big time but it was still a big hit in japan.

but i like beast wars (beasties for u fokes in canada) more tahn the old trans cause it was funney even though i grew up on the one transformers

Then its successor, Beast Machines, lost that edge and started taking the whole mythos and plot seriously. The great thing about Beast Wars is that it never seemed to take itself too seriously. Rhinox would fart, or Rattrap would do something to piss off Dinobot. But in Beast Machines, it had all of the humor of a Star Trek episode. >_>

I actually remember the headmasters. I also remember those egg shaped robots that were the former overseers of the Transformer community (they all used to be slaves under these guys). Optimus was eventually brought back but initially he was pretty insane and evil, but the old optimus came through and he was back to his normal self.

I just Japanimation, but they just shouldn't have screwed with my Transformers. Now it's that damn pokemon catch em while you can type story.

That's okay though, because now I've discovered the joy of Dragonball Z

If I may answer to an old post...
The egg shaped, multi tenticle beings were the Quintasons(sp?). They were the ones w/ 5 heads. Rodimus was the leader until the return of Optimus Prime, when he was rescued in the 4th season, and took back the Matrix.(Altho not sure about that at the 3-part episode of the intro of the Head/TargetMasters. They were the Nebulons and Daniel who became either the head or Gun of the Autobots/Decepticons.) It also introduced Fortess Maximus and Scorpinok. The Decepticons never left Char as far as I know.

I loved Beast Wars, watched it every day(prob still have episodes on tape.) Took a bit to fig out Beast Machines, but since it was p'ing/up where BW left off, only new charaters was the boy bat, the plant lady, and the three bad guy vehacons. Missed the ep where they get Silverbolt back, tho.Losing Tigertron/Air Razor was a terrible loss, even after their return as that flying polarbear.

I watched the episodes w/the Minicons, but after a while, just lost interest.
