As a continuation on the thought behind my initial post...
I believe that government should be run like a business inasmuch as it involves business, but that the needs and concerns of the people should be in-built, and this is where it diverges from regular business. That's why we need checks and balances when in ordinary business this would be inefficient.
I work for a business that is absolutely not run like a business. I can't imagine a business that is run any less like a business, honestly, while still maintaining the appearance of a business as far as correct tallying of funds taken in, basic inventory control, basic payroll management, and responsible handling of moneys due and owed. Beyond those basics, which they are old hands at, there is no incentivising, no managerial oversight, no creative problem-solving, no clear employee evaluation, no planning for the future, no specific vision or direction for the company...
I could go on and on. As bad as that sounds, it really is just scratching the surface. In spite of all of that, the owner treats his employees like gold (or like friends, anyway), which is the only reason I'm still there. My point is that this gives me a unique perspective on the possibilities for abysmal failure while maintaining appearance in business, and I believe this translates easily to government as well. If half of the government in this country is sitting on their ass and letting circumstances run them half as bad as this company, we are in a world of ★■◆●. The real problem, in my mind, is that anyone who is able to fix what's so wrong, isn't likely to give much consideration to the small-governmental common-sense that the U.S. began with, given the socialist lean of "higher-learning" in our day. But for a few good men that I don't see coming forward, we're kinda screwed. I'd be willing, but I think I've got a ways to go, and ultimately I don't know that it's what I see myself doing. All things being equal, I'd rather be in special services, education, or some level of manufacture. I know what it's like to try to deal with these people.

The problems with the way the government is managed and with the waste, etc. etc. are all the result of their primary solution for any problem that pops up. The politicians throw money at it until either it goes away, no matter how wasteful that process is, or throw money at enough voters to secure their support on election day so that the politicians don't suffer any consequences for their failure to correct the problem.

Can't argue with that.
