Courage

Post by CUDA »

I would like to point out TC's courage. when the ★■◆● started to hit the fan with this administration SHE was more of a man then the other liberals on this forum. while they have dropped off and are hiding under rocks until this blows over (if it blows over) she hasn't.

Salute TC, we may not always agree but I respect you for standing up.

Needless to say I always respected TC. One of the reasons being she can graciously accept when she is wrong and well defend her position even when we mob her with contrary evidence.

You're not one of those people who think we ought to preserve individual liberty, are you? Are you a home-grown terrorist?! :o :P

Nae thet's wot Ee'm talkin' boot! (Why am I using a scottish accent?!)

Nah, I'm not a homegrown terrorist. Mad scientist, yes, but only because a) I'm a scientist, b) I'm mad, and c) I come up with off-the-wall ideas for technologies and also consider myself a transhumanist. That last bit alone is enough to get you completely discredited in everything you propose in some circles, apparently.

I'm not sure what I think about preservation of individual liberty. I tend to be a pragmatist most of the time, but I'm an idealist at heart, and I love exploring and learning new things... so I guess there is a limit to how far one can take pragmatism. "Everything in moderation", though, including moderation.

Anything taken to the extreme, becomes an extreme, even liberty, ST. Because one person's liberty can easily become another person's strife.

That’s the point I keep making about “fairness” one persons “fair” is another’s oppression.

I guess your definition of libertarian is different than mine.

Everyone's definition is different from everyone else's on everything. I'm against taking away individual, personal liberties as a rule, moreso than most of society I would think (there are a lot of authoritarians and totalitarians out there - I think people should just do the right thing of their own free will, and if they don't, well, that's life), but probably not as much as some libertarians. I'm moderate enough to know to limit my own liberties myself out of respect for others' liberties most of the time, but there are a few things I'm adamant about because I care about them more. On a scale of one to ten, if 5 is middle-of-the-road moderate-liberties-for-all, I-give-some-up-for-you-but-some-I'm-gonna-keep libertarian, 1 is screw-my-liberties-in-general-for-the-greater-good-but-give-me-one-or-two libertarian, and 10 is don't-care-about-yours-as-long-as-I-have-mine libertarian, I'd say I tend to swing between 4 and 6. Depends on the issue, my mood, etc.

Basically, I advocate free will, but encourage consideration for others. Everyone should retain personal, individual liberty by law, but should be self-compelled to practise moral restraint and consideration for others. And as my dad says, "practise what you preach".

And I honestly don't know what the **** I was trying to say in that last post. I was half asleep when I wrote it. :|

So basically you don't stand for anything. You advocate for free will but only "encourage" consideration for others. And you want people to be self compelled to practice morals restraint toward others. Who's morals?.
You want people to have free will and then practice morals based on their own standards. SERIOUSLY?

Free will can't be forced on a person. That's why I encourage consideration for others. What I stand for is "Treat others like they have every right to do anything they want, don't try to force anyone to do something simply on the grounds that you think it is best for them - just do what you can for yourself without affecting anyone else negatively and hope that you set a good example". Yeah, it's way too idealistic to work in practise as things stand, but it's a reasonable philosophy and would work if every person were truly "an island unto himself". Yet another reason I want to get into space - unlimited room - if you have a problem with someone, you can simply put more distance between yourself and them until they cease to be an encroaching problem.

And yeah, this philosophy makes up like 99% of the problems I have with both myself and the world. But I think it's the only truly fair one.
