5 years old and D3 is still one of a kind compared to today's standards.
Too bad these major publishers dont get it.

At about 80,000 copies sold, I think they get the message just fine!

Maybe i'm just backwards...

Probably SP. Also I'd bet they counted in Destination Saturn (hm, or was that D2 ? Can't remember. I'm sure there was a shorter D3 version that came bundled w/ whatnot)

There were
shortened versions of D1, D2, and D3. D1 was Destination Saturn, D2 was Destination Quartzon, and D3 was Sol Ascent. Each of these came bundled with certain hardware. I don't know if they count these in the total sales or not.
Even if they don't, 200K copies of D3 isn't nearly what they hoped to get from the sequel to D1 and D2. IIRC, D2 sold over a million copies.

D3 sold 50,000 copies and FS2 sold 25,000 copies. I was told this by Jason at Outrage.

I clearly remember D3 hitting the shelves in '99. I remember reserving a copy at my local EB store, and picking it up the day after they had it in. I finished all 17 levels in 9 days,
without any cheat codes.

It was mid 99.
Sheesh, I've been playing this game off and on for 5 years?

Ok peeps, here's the facts straight from Toschlog:
"The final version of Descent 3 was built and delivered to Interplay on May 26, 1999. Duplication began on May 28. The game started shipping on June 11; I'm not sure when the first copies appeared in stores, but it was probably a few days after the 11th."

I'm pretty sure Sol Ascent doesn't count in the sales figures because it could only be obtained with a bundle.

i never played any of the descents on single player past the first level of d1. i all but threw the game out until i discovered modem to modem games! descent's multi was far superior than its singleplayer in my opinion.

I got D3 sole ascent in January of 2000 bundled with a 3DFX hammerhead Gamepad. Drummergirl and I spent 2 weeks trying to get to llevel 5 with it.
I then purchased D3 and tried out this thing called "multiplayer". With Drummergirl in tow, gamepad in hand, we tried a level called burning indika 3. It was safe to assume that I got annihilated.
Thanks to Descent 3 for all the memories... ~
