Botched updates AGAIN!
Watch out gamers and server admins, Microsoft blew it with 6 of their most recent updates. Glad I waited and saw that one of the updates was not checked and I researched the reason as to why. It still ain't fixed as of today, even though KB2859537, a Kernel patch, is still being offered via Windows Update until they find a fix. How nice of them. The other 5 have been pulled.

I think the adult coders in the room were out on vacation and the interns tried to do the job.

I thought all these updates got rolled out to businesses first? That makes them the first line beta testers. Technically, we're the second line beta testers.

Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
Hmm... those are usually hotfixes for specific non-security bugs. The main thing businesses do get first is new releases of products, such as Windows/Office. And Windows Server, kinda, except there isn't much of a retail stream for that anyway.
P.S. Not updating at all has its own set of problems. They're... also probably worse problems. Unless you don't use the internet, in which case sure, if it works for you, you might as well leave it how it is.

Oh, I keep my system updated. I'm not suicidal here. I'll just wait until they fix that one update, and you know they'll have to eventually.

Part of my job is IT. Of the 30 or so computers I'm administrating not a single one had a problem, including the servers. Normal users only get one of these patches anyway, KB 2859537. Uninstall and "hide" it if you are worried.

None of this month's updates caused problems on any of my Windows machines, either.

Damned if I do, damned if I don't. Let's just say that when I got married, I inherited his family curse which I call "The (My married last name) Voice of Doom". I then added it as a special corollary to Murphy's Law. It's got a better than odds hit rate too, nearly a 100%, so I stay clear of things that my husband voice-of-dooms. He just had to label this update as such, so I'll wait.
If my husband predicts that something will screw up and actually says it out loud, it will come to pass 100% of the time.

Hm. Yeah, apparently I have that update too... no issues... otherwise I guess I'd have some calls to make

Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
I noticed that the affected update from last month at least disappeared this month. Glad I waited on all my Windows 7 systems. However......... the circus that is the MS update team keeps on screwing up. Our old XP system has Office 2003 and did have this very problem, until I hid the update AFTER installing it.

Oh, so that's why my system's stuck in an update cycle today? Maybe it's MS's way of yelling, "Get the hell off of XP already, you luddite!"

I'm seeing the same issue on my development machine (Win7 with Outlook 2007 installed). They're looking into it:

I ran into an Office 2013 one on my Windows 7 VM:

Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
Yeah, I know. With any luck, I'll have some full-time work by then, so I'll finally be able to build a dream machine and get it on 7. Not sure what I'll do with this hunk of junk then.
Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
Yea, ran into this on a few machines at work. Since the update history lists them as installed, I just marked them as "hidden" -- no more nagging Did not have the problem on my machines, I prefer using OpenOfficeFoil wrote:I'm seeing the same issue on my development machine (Win7 with Outlook 2007 installed). Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
Yeah, our last old XP system is going to get retired very soon. Had it since 2004 and upgraded the graphics once. It's like an old friend now. I think MS is trying to break it on purpose before that time comes though.BUBBALOU wrote:You still have 199 days till "XP End of Life Cycle" in April 2014Top Gun wrote:Oh, so that's why my system's stuck in an update cycle today? That's the one we were talking about, Merlin.
In any case, it's been fixed:

It looks like they also fixed KB2810009 failing on install.

Oooops! Looks like Apple's team is following Microsoft's lead, at least with their Apple TV unit. Tsk, tsk.

The beauty of arch linux is that you know it's going to break something every time you update it, so there's no mystery about it...

You'd think that "makes significant percentage of test systems non-functional" would kind of be a red flag during testing.

Fresh out, the MS Sep-13 patches. Too early to say if there are problems, but you definitely should install them !

No joy with one from the recent October set, specifically KB2862330. It fails to install.

I just went through this month's updates on all my Windows boxes (one Vista, four Win7 machines, and a Server box), and had no issues.

Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
Tried it on one machine. Gave me the worries when upon the reboot, it stuck at 32% complete for about 2 minutes, but then it finished. Whew! I guess I'll try my other 2 systems.

Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
I noticed that on one of my machines as well. While it was working on that update, the power to the USB devices on that machine went on/off a couple of times, as if that update was resetting the USB controllers. Now I'm curious to know which update that was.tunnelcat wrote:...stuck at 32% complete for about 2 minutes...
Re: Botched updates AGAIN!
I was kind of amazed when I went to shut down my (ancient) XP box the other night and saw all of 18 updates need to be installed. Eighteen. For like a 12-year-old OS. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
