Russian nuclear missile drill...

Moscow Conducts Large-Scale Nuclear Attack Drill
Four long-range missiles launched in war games

Russian strategic forces carried out a large-scale surprise military drill on Wednesday, launching four nuclear missiles that were closely monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies, U.S. officials said.

The drill began around 9:00 am ET and included the test launch of two land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and two submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).

The test firings were unusual because of the number of missiles fired at one time, said officials who discussed some details of the drill on condition of anonymity...

So what? Usual military exercises. I doubt that, for to U.S. military officials, this is big news that is that the noise of war fighters in the air is a common background sound in provincial Russia. In Russia often conducted military exercises of various kinds of troops. I'm surprised that you did not know about it. This is not a cause for concern for Americans.

P.S. Though I was surprised to this phrase of the American authorities - "with that were closely monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies, U.S. officials said". LOL. :D Actually, usually Russia always warns in advance other countries about large military exercises in Russia. Only the USA not always warns the Russian authorities about the American military exercises. It always causes full combat readiness of all armies in Russia. All know that the next military test, for example, nuclear missiles in the USA about which the American authorities once again won't consider necessary to inform the Russian military, it sometime can badly end. Lord, save all us with you on the stupidity of American politicians.

I thought the more interesting thing out of Moscow today was Edward Snowden has been put in charge of Russia's "largest" web site!

An alternative headline for that is: Putin pokes Obama in the eye.

In my view, the United States simply must greatly reduce their weapons, the U.S. must destroy all stockpiles of chemical weapons they possess. Just so as not to provoke other countries to build up arms and to enable them to act in ways military intervention in other countries following the example of the United States. American politicians do not understand what they are doing today.

P.S. Now you do not want to understand, but in fact Russia is the only real friend of the U.S., who will be able to prevent a nuclear attack on the United States from other countries.

we've been doing just that, reducing those weapons for a couple decades. What is your complaint about the US based upon, sigma??

this is not a complaint but a wish. U.S. actually do not fulfill their obligations under international agreements to reduce U.S. arms. Under various pretexts. This is true.

20 years from now, nukes won't matter. It's going to come down to which nation has the best air, water, and ground drones. The U.S. is already the furthest ahead when it comes to this. Once we have 100,000 ground drones, I bet the U.S. starts invading more regularly.

more regularly? Are you suggesting that the US is invading his nation now, whatsoever? Once again, what proof can you provide for this? Or, are you basing it upon his stated claims?

No, I'm comparing the rate that we currently invade at. What are we at? 1 major invasion every 20 years? My point is, with disposable drone ground forces I expect us to be at 1 invasion every five years.

Mark my words. We are headed in the direction of replacing soldiers with robots. Though we're not yet there, it's only a matter of time. And once we can invade anyone without the cost of lost lives, I think things will change; we'll invade anyone we don't like. I think Russia's fear become a reality.
edit: Nukes won't help Russia, once we go pure drone. It would be like trying to stop a swarm of African bees with a shotgun. Russia is trying to keep up in the weapons department, but they rely too much on copying U.S. technology. If that continues we'll always have the cutting edge stuff while they'll still be running around in the snow with obsolete AK-47s while fighting robots one of our stupid politicians sent.

agreed, Isaac. War will become a high-tech exercise. A game, with truly deadly consequences as the shooters will be robots and the targets will still be humans...... :(

It sounds stupid, but I think the U.S. and Russia need a project. You know, something fun that gets lots of attention that shows us working with Russians, side by side. It will cost lots of money we don't have, but if it avoids the next world war it's worth it.

It doesn't sound stupid, but it seems to assume that the governments and the people are one entity. The powers are going to do what the powers are going to do. Leaders headed for World War do not need to be educated in sharing and cooperation, they need to be dethroned. As far as influencing the will of the people, I'm pretty sure that's the government's job.

NATO stages exercise as rearming Russia worries
some allies

* Russia's more assertive military worries some in West
* Diplomats puzzled by big rise in Russia forces spending
* Moscow probes NATO airspace, holds "aggressive" manoeuvres
* Putin says world is far from being peaceful and safe

By Peter Apps

LONDON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - When NATO forces start a major exercise in
Latvia and Poland this weekend, they will be rehearsing how to oust an
anonymous invading enemy from a fictional region.
For some, however, exercise "Steadfast Jazz" will test how the Western
alliance could deploy rapid reaction forces to its eastern flank - which
borders Russia.
A militarily resurgent and swiftly rearming Russia is alarming NATO states
that lie close to its territory, chiefly the Baltic States. Other alliance members
are simply baffled, wondering why Moscow feels the need to spend vast
sums on meeting a threat from the West they say will never materialise...

I know that the Japanese have a wise proverb - "The real winner of the fight is the one who was able to prevent a fight." In Russian, on the contrary, a close analogue of this saying is - "Who is to come to us with the sword, shall perish by the sword." And in the U.S.?

hm. you know that's a quote from Jesus, right? (Matthew 26:51-52)

The fact is that the US has been destroying chemical weapons for like 30 years here in Oregon. The problem is that "chemical" weapons are warheads with nerve agent and the like. The stuff is dangerous and most processes don't do a swell job of keeping the stuff contained during destruction. It's a very long dangerous process ...that no one want in the THEIR back yard. You can't just round up 50 years of weapons and drop them in the ground or a burn barrel somewhere and tada! done! and the arsenal HAS been reduced, just not eliminated.
THAT would be foolish.

The whole point of the cold war (in the end) was a peaceful Mexican stand-off. No one wants to pull that trigger, but no one is going to leave the other with an advantage. A very dangerous game of "Agree to disagree".

Russia isn't the only country with "nukes" pointed across their borders. There are subs off our shores to be sure. Humans like war. It's who we are as a species. Some may not like it, but I don't see it ending any time soon. My folk's generation vowed to end war ..lol .. look who's running the show now? Cuz you know, sticking daisies in missile silos will bring world piece.

Oh, My brother used to tell me of the war games that we used to play with the Russian soldiers in Germany before it was reunited. These kinda things happen regularly, we just don't hear about them. Remember the US pilots "Captured" by China a few decades ago?
as it turns out the US marine surveillance and the Chinese Air Force play chicken all the time. It was just that one time when they both got too close and collided.

The same with that tanker that one of our aircraft carriers rammed in the Gulf of Mexico back in, oh.. 84? 85?. You know WHY it hit that tanker? So it didn't ram the Soviet sub that was right next to it. ...and my source on this was a former classmate of mine that was stationed on that Carrier during the incident.

This little demonstration really means nothing.

I know back in the 80's I patrolled the Czechoslovakian border it was crazy. I would be in a jeep with 2 others I would be looking through binoculars while someone drove and the Officer would take notes. The officer would ask me what I saw. Once I told him that there is a vehicle with three people. He ask what are they doing I said one is driving, one is taking notes, and the other is looking through binoculars at us.

Why not give all the power hungry people AK's and AR15's (their choice, of course) and plop them all down in the north Sahara and let them have it. ;)

...just sayin....

AR15 and semi-auto AK47s are not a military weapons... the M16 and full auto AK47 are. The AR15 and semi auto AK are just a semi-auto.. Stop getting your gun education from NBC and learn what an actual military weapon is. k thanks

In 1962 the AR-15 was adopted by the US Air Force, then it received the designation M16.

Hmmmmm. Putin is willing to use nukes to respond to a conventional attack on Russia. Such a manly way to show everyone that you think your dick is bigger than everyone else's Putin, even when doing so would be the worst possible retaliation to a conventional aggressor. Nice way to swagger and destroy the world.

Empty talk. No one is planning to attack Russia and there is no reason to. Who cares?
