There is a lot of missing data for Africa there - likely half the continent isn't represented - but chances are it wouldn't affect the size much. The richer African countries are already shown.

I did notice that the map is apparently from 1995. I'm a bit curious what it's like now.

Also the US's size confuses me because it has both the continental US and Alaska (no love for Hawaii). So the size for the US would really be the combined area of the continental US and Alaska on the map?

Good point. I'd say they could probably show the scale of each state rather than group the USA into one country, since many states have a GDP greater than most countries.

It probably would be the combined area, yes - ignoring the Alaska chunk wouldn't make sense, and it doesn't have more GDP than Canada by itself.

It ruins the point of the map if one country gets any special treatment. You lose the ability to objectively compare it to any of the others.
I agree though, if this was done for all the countries on the map it would be a lot more interesting.
