Biased reporting
WOW, a 60 minutes reporter from that supposedly leftie 60 Minutes Show and her producer get caught in the act of promulgating someone else's known lie, which then forces a major network to go on air and apologize for it. It appears that Lara Logan and her producer have now been given a leave of absence over some sloppy lack of due diligence and false reporting.
http://www.boston.com/ae/media/2013/11/ ... story.html
Oh, and a publisher is pulling a book that has that same liar referenced and quoted in it too. Tsk, tsk. Messy.
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/11 ... -book?lite
But I don't believe her own belated apology that she'd told on air earlier than the one CBS released tonight, because Fox News was previously praising her for an Obama bashing speech she did in Chicago in October, right after her initial 60 Minutes report and before she was caught in her little, err, misreporting. Hmmmm, so she must be a rightie. Not very impartial of Logan and her producer to forget about doing a little due diligence with their sources. I'm betting Logan will end up at Fox....

Re: Biased reporting
And on another note
MSDNC fired Alex Baldwin for making a homophobic remark off camera to a reporter. But doesnt do anything to Martin Bashir for making vile prepared remarks about Sarah Palin on the air.
the difference? One fit their agenda, the other did not.
its no wonder MSDNC ratings are dead last.

Sorry the thread title said biased reporting, didnt realize I dodged anything. I guess then according to you, you can only be biased if you lean to the right huh.

Re: Biased reporting
well, first off, Baldwin wasn't a reporter. His show wasn't a show with reporting, apparently, merely interview fluff pieces. Second, the OP was about Sixty Minutes and a major journalism issue: putting on a provable liar as a supposed eyewitness, and promoting him on a news program while another branch of your company is selling his book. You respond with a story that HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT(Bashir's comments off air). That, my friend, is a dodge, and a pretty transparent and clumsy one at that.CUDA wrote:Sorry the thread title said biased reporting.
um, no. But I do try and stick to the topic at hand, even when it is challenging to my personal ideology.I guess then according to you, you can only be biased if you lean to the right huh.

Re: Biased reporting
Nice to know you dont know what you're talking about AGAIN.
Bashir's comments were ON AIR. he read them off the teleprompter DURING his show. which shows that they came from up the chain. they had to have been approved by the editors above him. Try to keep up

Re: Biased reporting
So a guy who could have been in the area says he was but probably lied about being there. In his 'story' he gave no new information about the attack with regards to who, what, where or why.
60 Minutes put him up as credible and now has retracted the story and apologized.
Ok, cool. The guy was probably thinking book sales and that scam has now been ended.
But really TC what you have here is the proverbial dog bites man story!
60 Minutes is the same outfit that had Dan Rather use forged documents to try and derail G W Bush's election. Documents that numerous experts describe as blatant forgeries. Documents that Dan Rather reported: "We are told [the documents] were taken from Lieutenant Colonel Killian’s personal files" and incorrectly asserted that "the material" had been authenticated by experts retained by CBS.
Despite his despicable act of anti-journalism Rather was given awards by his industry. Probably for taking one for the team.....
So really, in the grand scheme of things we see a 60 Minutes reporter doing typically shoddy work but not the kind that helps the team and she crossed the line when she stated that al Queda was NOT tamed by Obama's efforts therefore she gets no reward. Even though she is obviously correct in her assertion about al Queda.
Definitely dog bites man. And way to go to take a report that has a fault and try to associate it with Fox even though they had nothing to do with the story! You are racking up your frequent spin miles.

Re: Biased reporting
Basically, between the Rather thing, and this, hasn't Sixty Minutes lost any credibility it once had for serious journalism??

Re: Biased reporting
I agree that Bashir should go too. I'm not fond of Palin, but he crossed the line. If MSNBC can't clean house like CBS, it's their poison. Personally, I've never watched Bashir at all.CUDA wrote:Sorry the thread title said biased reporting, didnt realize I dodged anything. Fox News was the OTHER news outlet that glommed onto the same little lie and then used it to bolster their anti-Obama smear campaign. Isn't that all they do when they report stuff? Tough tooties. Suckers. Will Robinson wrote:Definitely dog bites man. And way to go to take a report that has a fault and try to associate it with Fox even though they had nothing to do with the story! Re: Biased reporting
Hmmm, some integrity. So would a liberal bashing, fact twisting and fear mongering Fox News "personality" fall on his or her sword for some nastiness spouted on air about, let's say, Obama (you know they've done it too)?

Depends on the language they used. In Bashir's case his comments were beyond the paletunnelcat wrote:Hmmm, some integrity. Re: Biased reporting
have to agree with Woodchip on that point, having read the transcript of Bashir's stupidity. Oh, and I'm quite sure he didn't 'fall on his sword'. He was fired, no matter how the wording of the press release paints it.

integrity doesnt take almost a month. It was public pressure, not integrity.tunnelcat wrote:Hmmm, some integrity.

He wasn't fired for lack of integrity, and certainly not for bashing anyone/thing. He was fired for potentially driving away customers. They only have 10 or 12 left not counting family and friends so they really have to be careful about losing another one....

Re: Biased reporting
Lets be fair. Bashir made the comments on November 16, so both of us are wrong. It was 3 weeks ago. And ya you keep telling yourself he was on "vacation" interestingly that "vacation" was immediately after the firestorm of his comments and subsequently never ended. I'll have to respectfully disagree with you.callmeslick wrote:it was two weeks, and he was on holiday leave the entire time, CUDA. Re: Biased reporting
My next question is if it's about integrity then why havent the editorial staff that wrote those statments gone also? They were prepared statements written and approved up the chain from Bashir

Re: Biased reporting
for the same reason the entire production team of the 60 minutes story isn't fired, nor half of Fox News editorial department, etc, etc. It's about the appearance, and the ratings. Integrity is an archaic concept seemingly with meaning only for old fecks like us.

So the guy gets fired and that's still not good enough for some of you? Jesus people, just let it go. Has nothing to do with integrity, only stupidity of a commentator trying to get ratings.

Comprehension isn't your strong suit HUH?
1. "officially" he didn't get fired he QUIT.
2. no one is calling for any additional firings. the discussion was about a matter of integrity of the station, if they had integrity others up the chain would have been terminated as well because it just wasn't him that was involved.he's was just the face and the fall guy.

Re: Biased reporting
I think Cob is keeping up just fine, and agreeing with my general point that if integrity were even a possibility, there would be few employees left at Fox, MSNBC, CBS, CNN or anyplace else on broadcast news. I have only watched Al-Jazeera America on two occaisions, but they likely will prove to have issues as well(for the record, both shows I watched were VERY good, and rather even-handed and well-rounded).CUDA wrote:Comprehension isn't your strong suit HUH?
