Also, is there something else a non-techie could do to protect themselves in public?

How about Portable Firefox? Any used it? Think it's safe and hides your coming and going?

A VPN service will prevent some types of traffic interception from happening (such as someone listening in when you are on an unsecured wifi), but if you log in to facebook/google/etc they will still know who you are and where you go via tracking cookies and "like" buttons. It also masks your IP address making it harder (but not impossible) to locate you or determine your ISP. It does not protect you from drive-by download exploits, malware, or other methods of compromising the device/os directly.

Firefox portable does nothing for privacy.

Krom,

What would you suggest for a non-techie who was using their laptop either on wifi or wired, let's say in a hotel room or public wifi?

I know DON'T.

The VPN will be pretty much as good as surfing from home.
