New system (v2)

Post by Plague »

I posted a couple of months ago about getting a new system with Socket 939 and PCI-E. Now that the S939 reviews are out, I'm thinking that I can't afford to go in that direction. $500 on the CPU (3500+, the lowest end CPU on S939) and a good GPU is just going to run me too much. So...

Here's what I've got now. I am now planning to overclock to get some better performance out of it. That probably means getting some better RAM and maybe a different case (I believe that one is designed for quietness). I liked the feature in the Sonata case that had a reusable air filter that could be cleaned and then put back in. Also, do I need fans with more airflow? Any recommendations at all would be helpful. Thanks!

Sure, but they also scream at 32bit applications. One more question:

I can't find the same deal for the X800 Pro that I had before. So I'd be buying it for $399. I found an X800XT for $435. Is it worth it? (Let me rephrase that... I know it isn't worth $400 dollars, but is it worth the $35 extra to get the XT?) I could spend that $35 on better RAM...

I guess if it's a flip flop between ram and card, I'd go the card. I mean, you're going to have the same amount of ram anyway, just getting better timings with that 35 bucks... Worthless over all when you measure your framerates as compaired to the gain you will see with the card upgrade.

I know that the A64s overclock differently than the XPs. The FSB is built into the chip and not changeable, correct? So I can overclock without having to get some better RAM. I've heard that the 3000+ can usually easily make 2300Mhz.

Edit:
Crud. That deal on the X800XT charges tax, oh well. I also decided to go with some A-Data PC4000 for the memory.

wow... nice. I need a password/user name to see what you got now.

A64s have the memory controller incorporated.

380 is enough. I have 360 and no power problems even with heavy overclocking. However I am thinking of getting 500 or more watts for my next upgrade anyway.

380 Watts will be fine. Besides the overclocking, the only other thing I plan on putting in it would be a second hard drive at a later date. I chose some A-Data PC4000 RAM that was recommended on another BB. Hopefully the OCing will go well, I haven't done it in a long time (so I'll be back for some help when I'm ready :D ).

You do relize that the OS you are ordering is not an OS at all right? License only means there are no disks. However, if you already have a XP install disk then you are fine.

Yeah, I've already got the Windows XP Pro disk. There's no way I was going to spend an extra $40 or so to get another disk. :P
