sadly, so predictable
...I watch the Coke ad during the superbowl, with the multiple language celebration of the US, and thought to myself:"some so-called conservatives are going to have a hissy fit over this". And, I was right:

You are right, some 'so called' conservative is disturbed by the ad. He has made a declaration without having any true knowledge that Cokes intentions for the ad was creating a political rhetorical weapon.
And now you are trying to take it and wield it because that is your arena too.
And so 'predictable' turns out to be profoundly aprapros.

I don't know. Glenn Beck and a few of the Fox personalities are more of the "reactionary nutcase" part of the political spectrum.

for the record, I thought the ad was cool. Nice camera work, and reminding everyone that we are, and always have been, a mix of many nations, speaking many languages(Delaware, for instance was a mix of folks speaking English, Dutch and Swedish for nearly 100 years). What Will is getting at is beyond me........I suppose he thinks Coke created the ad to generate political controversy, but there should be no excuse for controversy here.

My dad grumbled about this ad, which just made me laugh. The best part was how many of the Twitter complaints I saw that couldn't even correctly name the song.

I don’t have a problem with that ad, and I don’t have a problem with people speaking other languages, but I still believe that the second generation in this country should at least know how to speak english.
And I guess I’m a racist because I boycott certain stores in this area because they can’t understand what I say.

So will the ad now mean we will have 35 different number combos to enter in a phone when we call some place to pick what language we want to talk in?
Re: sadly, so predictable
I don’t give a damn how many languages people are speaking, but if you engage in commerce…then you need to speak English.

That's why English is taught in European and Japanese schools, just to prepare their kids for doing business with the world. English is the language of business worldwide for now. However, most Americans severely lack second language skills. That may hobble us in the future if things change.Spidey wrote:I don’t give a damn how many languages people are speaking, but if you engage in commerce…than you need to speak English.

Yes indeed.
Having things in common is a great thing, especially being able to communicate.

I agree with you, essentially. However, from my experience(largely with Mexican and Guatamalan immigrants in Virginia) that is exactly what happens. My wife once noted, at an open-air farmers market we frequent when down there, how the Mexicans become Virginians in a generation or two. And, she meant that as a compliment, should any wonder.Spidey wrote:I don’t have a problem with that ad, and I don’t have a problem with people speaking other languages, but I still believe that the second generation in this country should at least know how to speak english.

I remember back when Esperanto was supposed to be the new international language. Oooooh, it was created by a Russkie of mixed cultural heritage too. I thought those didn't exist in Russia.flip wrote:A common language creates unity----True statement.
