No, it still needs the sun, what it doesn't need is as much carbon dioxide (tip: read the article). Basically what they are talking about amounts to carnivorous plants which eat other plants as a source of carbon, which is indeed quite interesting.

Maybe it needs the Sun to thrive, but not to survive? Is it possible that it could fall back to sustain itself, in the advent of no Sun or a prolonged blackout of the Sun?
