A while back somethin funky happened to my desktop (color mode went wacky) and everything reverted to 256 colors.
I changed it back to 32bit, but not any/all .ico files look like they're still in 256 colors which looks like crap.
Any ideas?
Also, this is my work laptop (win2k) so I can't reinstall windows or use the win2k disc to repair (since there is none).

Get TweakUI and rebuild your icon cache.

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Display->Effects->Show icons using all possible colors?
(you may try unchecking, applying and then rechecking it)

I have also found that opening the Properties menu of the icon, clicking "Change Icon," and re-selecting the default icon usually works. If that doesn't work, try selecting another icon and then going back to the default one. For some strange reason, older versions of Windows sometimes forgot to reset the icon colors, particularly after playing low-resolution games. I had no end of trouble with this when playing Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds on Windows ME (yes, go ahead and laugh
).

Well, now the ones that were fine look like crap too...
Time to find TweakUI.
Edit:
Well, tweakui didn't do anything either. Repair icons didn't seem to do anything.
Neither did changing the icon in the shortcut's properties.

Just a shot in the dark, but you try changing your monitor type to plug & play monitor or default monitor, and back? Have windows re-detect your video card?

As stated above, it's a laptop. I have no monitor.
The video card is some ATI mobile thing.

Yes, but it'll detect your LCD as a type of monitor....
