My little mixer rig allows me to record stuff from the computer. There's probably a much more efficient method of doing it even without such hardware, but no matter.
I've managed to stream the entire D1 intro song and make an MP3 out of it. It sounds as rendered by Sound Blaster 16. I used DosBox to obtain the best simulation.
My question: Is someone interested in obtaining MP3s of all songs within Descent? Or maybe my efforts would be needless as there already is such an assemblage of MP3s?

Re: Sound Blaster-rendered D1 music
Well, I used the options in Setup and it allowed me only options such as Sound Blaster, SB 16, SB Pro, Awe32 and Gravis Ultrasound, the latter two not working. Other than that, the sound like I remember it from childhood was rendered best by SB 16.
PS I got the AWE32 package for Descent 2, copied the DXA file into the directory, but hear no difference at all in the sound of the midis. Is there something else I have to do to get it to work?

^ DXA Addons only work with Rebirth.
no config needed, just place the DXA file into your Descent or Descent 2 folders.
if you just want to listen to the files...
rename the .DXA to .ZIP and unpack.

Re: Sound Blaster-rendered D1 music
I only play with Rebirth, actually. And for some reason, Total Commander allows me to enter the DXA package and extract the files from there without a problem. It must recognize that it's a ZIP-style package, even though the extension is different.ThugsRook wrote:^ DXA Addons only work with Rebirth.

As for the files, the ones I got are actually AWE64, and the difference between those and the midis rendered by my system is so negligible that they actually probably worked fine, only I couldn't hear any difference

Re: Sound Blaster-rendered D1 music
^ the AWE64 uses the GM35REVC.SF2 (3.5mb) soundfont. its a very early version of what is now 4GMGSMT.SF2 (4mb), so they might sound similar but not exact. some songs however dont sound very similar.
the AWE32's 1MGM.SF2 is drasticly different due to only being 1mb.
the Ensoniq (8mb) pack is obviously going to be very very different. quality level reaches SC-55 standards, but it doesnt sound like a SC-55.
the Roland pack is the standard GM.DLS but im running it in hardware mode (bank loaded) which makes it much better quality and full stereo.

Re: Sound Blaster-rendered D1 music
has anyone ever done a hardware recording of D1 music on a SB16? Both in midi and opl 3 mode.
