But coming through ellis island makes it a legal attempt.

as they pointed out, some were stowaways, and not all of those came through Ellis. My wife's grandfather is one.

Ya I understand they were stowaways, that fact is irrelevant if they went through ellis island and became citizens legally.

I guess the point is--they arrived here, and were accepted into the nation, despite no family in most cases. That they were allowed to live here, be educated here, build lives here and become citizens, is a testament to the United States that once was a given. No longer. We've become a nation of hatred, and ideologically driven craziness. Or, as Chris Christie noted the other day(when stating that New Jersey will welcome relocation of children to that state), "These are children, and we welcome them because that's what American does".

I disagree with the nation of hatred. Are there some? Sure there always is. But most people feel that if it was just done legally it wouldnt be such an issue. Ellis island was a screening place for those coming in. Maybe we need a new screening place instead of just dropping people off in random cities without letting the population of those cities know about it and with just the HOPE that they will show up for their hearings.
Maybe its time to give gitmo a new purpose. Secure the border and make it the new ellis island.

just a thought

I did...did you?:

" a testament to the courage of millions of children who passed through those same doors, often traveling without an older family member to help them along."

"But according to Moreno, thousands of unaccompanied children came over without friends or family on the other side of the crossing, many of them stowaways."

So some did, but not all as you imply.
