False facade, rotten foundation

Post by Tunnelcat »

A Charlie Rose interview with a die hard liberal, Bill Maher, that will make most Christians, and even ThunderBunny, stand up and cheer. Even I now agree with Bill Maher on the points he makes.

The relevant part of the show's interview:

Let's see... the clip was mostly about Islam and Christianity being fundamentally different with respect to how we should treat other... is that an accurate summary?

So, what about that do you disagree with? Or are the points that you agree with on other subjects?

any examples where he isn't, Will? Whether one agrees or not, does not reflect dishonesty, yet you are accusing him of exactly that. Why?

Maher voices his "honest" opinion. doesn't mean that opinion is correct

I don’t know why anybody would feel the need to defend Bill Maher…but with that being said…

I wouldn’t exactly call the guy an outright liar, but I did see a lot of “intellectual dishonesty” on that show he once hosted called Politically Incorrect.

I think you are exhibiting a slight version the kind of intellectual dishonesty Mahr engages in all the time.
Your implying that 'anyones opinion is dishonest' in order to give Mahr cover from Spideys indictment of his methods when you know it is not the truth. Opinions are not inherently dishonest. It requires intent to be dishonest for one thing...

My opinion that 2+2=4 is based on some pretty sound academic review and I truthfully believe that source to be legitimate and correct.
Therefore my opinion that 2+2=4 is not, in any way, dishonest.

Go link us any Politically Incorrect video and I will gladly watch it and then point out how Mr Mahr engages in dishonest tactics to spin a topic to protect his side and demean the other.

As to why I point this out? Because it matters.

I asked for proof of your claim. You provide nothing. Again. Instead, you show you can't even discern between opinion and fact. Sad.

The dishonesty on that show had nothing to do with opinions…in fact that show had little or nothing to do with opinions…in the sense you might assume.

That show was about creating an illusion.

OK, what did you mean with your comment?

quit trying to be all puffed up and offended and explain what your comment meant...

Are you actually trying to say you can't be intellectually dishonest if you hide your comments behind a flag of 'opinion'?

If so you are strike two and getting more flagrant...

I was commenting upon CUDAs statement(correct) that one's opinion can be an 'honest' opinion, yet not be 'correct'. That can be said of any opinion.

OK, a little bit redundant and bordering on non sequiturious for the context of this discussion...but Ok.

But that doesn't mean Mahr isn't being dishonest. Go post your favorite few shows and I'll expose it for you if you are truly in denial of his tactics.

Will, this is getting stale already. I asked for ONE example from you, since YOU made the claim about a man's honesty. You've come up empty, but want to wait for me to waste the time and dig up video clips. I'll pass, thanks, as I think you've proven my point already.

I asked for an example of where Maher WASN'T being honest(intellectual or otherwise). Frankly, CUDA, I think you had it right the first time....one can have an honest opinion without that opinion being correct, but calling the opinion dishonest requires proof of why someone is offering that opinion knowing the premise isn't honest.

The same way I call you dishonest, because he isnt stupid either. He obviously hears the opposing arguments, reads the news reports, etc. and often constructs his 'opinion' in complete denial of those pesky alternatives that are proven out to be factual. Just like you often do. When the intent is obvious and the only explanation is that he/you are really smart enough to know beteer then I bank on my judgement of which is more likely...stupid or intentionally getting it wrong.

He is a champion of the narrative that fits the liberal template. Not the champion of the truth as he was in that interview about Islam vs other religions.

This one little statement was all it took to get his show pulled by the network after 9/11. Everyone in New York, including the network executives, were so traumatized after those attacks they couldn't think straight, so if you weren't with them 100%, you were against them. Hell, if any politician didn't wear that ridiculous lapel flag pin, they were traitors. Personally, I think Maher made an honest assessment and it was a silly reason to pull the show.

Bush called the terrorists cowards in his 9/11 speech, Maher countered calling them warriors and then said this:
Bill Maher wrote:"We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly."

I think I stood up and applauded when he said those words, TC. He has a better working definition of cowardice than most of his fellow Americans, sadly.

Anybody who kills innocent people in what will be an instant death, is a coward in my opinion, as far as the 2000 miles away remark…well that’s just modern technology…what are you going to do.

If you have balls…take on someone that can defend themselves.

On one hand: I understand that "all's fair in love and war" and that when you're out-manned and out-gunned, you tend to turn to guerilla/terroristic tactics. I also understand that it's not that risky to sit back and shoot cruise missles.

At the same time: There's a cementry in Arlington full of men who looked death in the face and took it for their country, so the terrorists don't have the corner on that aspect. There also isn't a cementary for the men who went out and killed civillians for their country... and in military circles it's considered cowardly to use your military might to kill people who aren't trying to fight back. I also disagree with characterizing the use of cruise missles [against targets who are actively hostile towards the US] as cowardly - I call it using your advantage in a lop-sided fight.

Yea, and killing yourself in the act of murdering defenseless civilians is even more of a cowardly act, because you have removed yourself from any consequences of the act.

Hitler…that coward killed himself instead of facing consequences.

Killing anyone for personal reward is not brave, it is greedy, selfish, psychotic.
To get on your god's good side? To qualify for a bunch of virgin brides? To be worshiped as a mayrtr?

Nothing heroic there.

Want to be a true hero?
Kill yourself first, then tell god you did it so he can send you back to kill some people in his name.
If he agrees with your plan and you get to come back THEN you were one brave dedicated sumbitch with divine status.

Doing it because some guy told you that's what a god wants is not brave, it is something terribly pathetic.

Yeah Will, Bush would have been better to say psychotics instead of cowards and Maher shouldn't have said they were warriors either, then been censored and fired for saying it. It's a free country with free speech after all and that's what our soldiers are dying to protect. I'd say ABC was more the coward for firing Maher and not standing up for his freedom of speech. No one fired or took to task Mr. Bush for his poor choice of words either. I wish someone had.
