Swear Filter complaint
I can live with my rare use of strong language being edited out, but I don't like the fact that my b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t in the E&C forum (Judge: Bush Abortion Ban Unconstitutional) was turned into a 4-letter word. Could this be changed? Thanks.

It was decided years ago that we'd have a swear filter, and nothing has changed that would make that decision any different, so don't waste your breath.
With respect to having the right number of asterisks... if you want people to be able to guess what swear word you had there, self-censor it. Type b-u-l-l-s-star-star-star instead of typing the whole thing and having it turn into ****. That's really what the swear filter is for -- it's a backup for those who can't figure out how to type without swearing or censor their own swearing. It's not the admin's responsibility to keep you from looking dumb if you don't censor your own swearing.
Personally, I liked the swear filter that replaced your swear words with "poopy" and "booger". It had the exact same workaround -- type bulls*** and you're OK, but if you try to type the whole word you end up looking like a dork. Make it a habit to censor the swear words how you want them censored, and you won't look dumb when the swear filter does it for you.

Thanks, Lothar, I can't believe I didn't think of that. I had thought of trying to go around the filter, but I dismissed that idea.Lothar wrote:With respect to having the right number of asterisks... if you want people to be able to guess what swear word you had there, self-censor it.
I strongly disagree: Grow a little?.. The year 2004? Where does it stop?Ferno wrote:I believe we should be worried about bigger things than a *dirty word*. it' the year 2004 for pete's sake. grow a little.
To press it further: that's really a foolish statement.. worrying (I'm not losing any sleep, but one's speech is worth more if it's filled with descriptives instead of expletives; and some swearing is just ugly/filthy) about swearing doesn't inhibit my ability to worry about anything else. As a human being, and I have the God-given ability to worry about whatever I like once I've taken the few minute or so of my precious pondering time to deal with the subject of bad language. What sense does that make?
Put more concisely: Just say no.
I'm not asking to cuss like a sailor. I'm just saying that we should have a little more freedom in expressing our ideas.
I'm sure most people that browse this board have heard of words like bull---- and the like. also it would be a good idea to tell people when it's appropriate and when it's not instead of censoring it. TV gets away with it, even on prime time. Case in point: oprah's show one day (i don't remember when) they were talking about how to do anal sex quite graphically. and kids that stay home with their mothers probably watched it.

talkin' bout strong language: You can write in the German DForum whatever you want - no word is X'd out - there is no reason to do this. WE HAVE the FREEDOM to say what we WANT - uncensored. (We can be unpolite w/o using strong words, hehe )
To be serious I think to X out does nothing else than to animate one to USE these words - who cares...they are X'd out and so no one can blame me for saying M*o*F*o, f**k, p_i_s_s__o_f_f or whatever. (hmm..when i watch an American movie I have one of these words in every third sentence spoken...man, what a culture)
Believe it or not, but I felt angry as some words have been X'd out ingame by D3. Sad enough that game developers an descentBB-forum admins see a need of censoring. Believe me: giving these words free to write (and read) will for sure end up in less using them.
greetz, Diti (happy to live in Europe)
