The Nutty Professor

Post by woodchip »

I sometimes wonder at what drugs the left injests to come up with this thought process:

“Evidence shows that the difference between those who get bedtime stories and those who don’t – the difference in their life chances – is bigger than the difference between those who get elite private schooling and those that don’t,” Swift said.

In his article, Gelonesi (ABC) added: “This devilish twist of evidence surely leads to a further conclusion that perhaps – in the interests of leveling the playing field – bedtime stories should also be restricted."

Even more disturbing:

"According to Swift, from a purely instrumental position the answer is straightforward.

‘One way philosophers might think about solving the social justice problem would be by simply abolishing the family. If the family is this source of unfairness in society then it looks plausible to think that if we abolished the family there would be a more level playing field.’ "

So now you begin to understand the political manipulations by the Democratic party. First they out and out destroyed the black family and made them dependent voters. Next by touting the mantra of their nut job professors and getting it in to mainstream discussions, they are now looking to kill all families as they give unfair advantages to children. I guess state run creches will be the new "family" units where the people running them are trained professionals who will make sure all kids grow up disadvantaged and mediocre .

Again I see the same pattern from these nut jobs…take some truth and taint it with absolute nonsense.

I was watching a NewsHour segment on how parent-child interaction has an affect on how good a child does in school, or other kinds of life affecting results,* the conclusion was to start these weird kinds of supplement a parent programs. (because we all know the government can cause….errr cure all of the social problems)

But at least nobody advocated eliminating the family, in that article.

*Not that common sense won't tell you the same thing.

As soon as I saw the name "Swift" I guessed it was a satire piece in the vein of "A Modest Proposal".

Please tell me it's a satire piece in the vein of "A Modest Proposal". That it's, like, advocating the exact opposite of a sensible solution in order to be memorable and to draw your eye to the actual sensible solutions included in a footnote somewhere. Please tell me people who are actually this dumb wouldn't be taken seriously enough to have an article written about them...

I don't know, Lothar.

But here's the article where the OP stems from, quote-mining notwithstanding.

I'm not a big fan of pushing for "equality". I'd rather have "equity", as the term is used in my school district.

The idea behind equity is that you try to provide everyone with what they need in order to succeed. You don't pull down the people who are ahead, and you don't lower the standard of success. But you also acknowledge that some people need more help to reach the point of being capable of succeeding, and you direct your efforts and resources toward creating systems and structures that help those who are behind catch up, while not simultaneously hamstringing those who are ahead.

Families provide children advantages and disadvantages. Some of it is genetic, some of it is cultural/social, some of it is economic. Let's do what we can to help overcome the disadvantages, and stop getting caught up in eliminating advantages.

Where in the article did it say this was part of the Democratic platform? Are Swift and Brighouse employed by the party? How do you know?

My guess is that you didn't actually read the article Ferno posted, but are just regurgitating something you read on a conservative news site. I don't see how you can come up with this tin-foil hat Democratic conspiracy crap if you actually read the article unless you have incredibly low reading comprehension.

What I'm curious about is how two philosophy professors in Australia have anything whatsoever to do with the Democratic Party. But woody's apparently off his meds for the moment, so this is what we get.

It's not the lack of meds TG. It's the fact he's been trained to obey without question.

Perhaps your meds are off as being reported on by a ABC affiliate in AU does not make them Australian:

"Adam Swift is a professor of politics and international studies at the University of Warwick in England."

As to having anything to do with the Democratic party, I don't believe my OP said he had anything to do with the Dem. Party. That the Democratic party has used said dependency tactics is a given. You should really learn to read so you know when I am commentating on my own and when I am quoting a source. Like Lothar pointed out, the sad fact that someone in ABC news would even report on this is troubling.

You really need to stop being posters shadows and giving knee jerk responses without first doing a little research. Makes you look like a...well, liberal nutjob.
