The man arrested in connection with the seemingly random killing of a woman who was out for a stroll with her father along the San Francisco waterfront is an illegal immigrant who previously had been deported five times, federal immigration officials say.

What? Like regular American citizens never commit murder? Besides, we've forcibly deported Mexicans before, even some who were born here and had legal citizenship, in the 1930's during the Depression. THEN we asked them to come back under the Bracero Program when we needed their labor, especially agricultural labor, during and after WWII. We created our own problem with our neighbor to the south, then as now, and it's not solely an Obama problem either. It's an ongoing American problem that's been created and dealt with by presidents of both parties. Nor will mass deportations work permanently either. It's indiscriminate as to who gets deported and who doesn't, even if some of them are American citizens by birth.

Bingo. The issue isn't open borders or closed borders, it's not immigration that's too strict or too lax overall... it's immigration policy that's non-sensical (I've regularly seen it described as "kafkaesque".) And because immigration policy doesn't match what's actually happening on the ground -- it doesn't provide adequate documented immigrants to meet the demand for labor -- that creates back channels that are filled mostly with people who just want to work (who aren't getting stopped by toothless immigration policies either). And those back channels become a haven for violent criminals -- the one guy looking to stab people can blend in with dozens who just want to keep their heads down while they work the fields and send money back to their families.

That's why we have an "immigrant problem". I'd call it more of a "transient labor" problem. Our nation is treating these people as disposable, cheap and convenient labor and everyone's happy when those immigrants are needed for hard work and they're out there slaving away at back breaking jobs all to produce our food. But when we don't need them for work, they become an political issue for politicians, because they created the problem by kowtowing to big agribusiness in the first place. We have no coherent policy to treat them either as temporary guests or grant them permanent citizenship. Big agribusiness wants it that way, so everyone pays for the problems that the lack of a national and rational policy creates. Every president and every business that uses these people for their labor, from times past and present, is guilty too, not just Obama.

The right wing gripe that San Francisco officials should've warned ICE when they released guy from jail is ludicrous. Why should the city take it upon themselves to warn ICE when they release a prisoner from their jails who has no local charges placed against him? All this guy was at the time was an illegal alien that the feds wanted detained for deportation proceedings, so the city officials really had no legal justification to keep him locked up in their jails. Many states are now refusing ICE detainer orders because they don't have the jail space nor the funds to keep illegals locked up anyway. If ICE wanted to deport this guy, they should have been the ones detaining him in a federal jail, since they were the ones that wanted him deported in the first place. The feds are going about detaining illegals by trying to do it on the cheap, by placing the burden of incarceration costs on the states and local cities. It's not working either.
