Jurassic World

Post by Isaac »

Good movie, go see it.

I saw Jurassic Park right before seeing Jurassic World and I noticed something and I want to know if you feel the same way.

Out of you who saw both movies, did any of you think that the original Jurassic Park had more realistic CGI than this new one? I did. Now, I'm not saying Jurassic World had bad CGI, because it was on par with Avatar, but there was just something that came off as more cartoonish than the original. I can't really put my finger on what it was.

I did a comparison of the two movies. Nothing specific, because Jurassic World doesn't have as much uploaded to the net as Jurassic Park. And Jurassic Park did have animatronics, but I made sure to select scenes that featured CGI rendered dinosaurs.

My theory is, because Jurassic Park relied heavily on animatronics, the CGI had to match the material of those real models. Also, the camera used in Jurassic Park was shot with 90's quality film, not SSD. So the CGI was challenged to match real models shot with this kind of film.

I think you're right. There's only so much CGI can render to make something look real. Smoke, textures and lighting are still not quite there yet to fully imitate the real world. There's always some telltale that ruins the illusion. There's just no enough data they can render and store on an SSD, currently, that will match the high resolution of film...yet.

There is one thing that blew the illusion for me with the first Jurassic Park. If you watch the T-Rex's mouth when open, you will see those 2 membranes on the inside corners of his mouth. Those are supposed to be, anatomically, the main jaw muscles that close the mouth. Instead of contracting like any muscle should in order to close the mouth, on the T-Rex animatronic model, they fold and bend like the pieces of rubber they're made of. Not.

Is the issue visible here, in this gif?

Not quite. There was another close up somewhere in the movie it really showed. I did find this youtube of the first T-Rex attack scene. You need to freeze it at 1:09 where the T-Rex's mouth is almost fully open. You can kind of see what I mean. That membrane is slightly bent. It showed up better somewhere else, but it would take watching the movie again.

The thing I like about the original Jurassic Park, and something that at least some directors have moved back to in recent years, is the usage of actual physical effects along with CGI. There are obviously some effects that you simply can't pull off without the aid of computers, but until we get to the point where we can render fully-photorealistic scenery, the human brain is always going to be able to tell the difference. It's why the Original Trilogy's ships will always look so much better than the prequels' huge flashy video-game-esque cutscenes, despite the visible matte outlines: they were real.

Absolutely, TG. They did this in Lord of the Rings in many places and it worked very well. Lots of composting though, but still, it looked great.

He rips up the whole bottom of the vehicle like it's made of toothpicks. The tires were dessert. Bruce the shark (Jaws) wasn't that good at chomping things, at least for an animatronic movie star.

Damn you Issac, now I've got to watch the whole movie just to find the best T-Rex open mouth scene. They are re-running the whole on Encore in HD right now. Just watched Jack Reacher on there. Pretty good for a Cruise flick.

Yeah, the T-Rex really was the star. And she was also the hero at the end of the movie.

Also, I just watched something saying that the first Jurassic Park was cutting edge with their dino research. And that Jurassic World was using out dated research, meaning they made dinos look like they did in the first movie. At the time of the first movie we weren't sure about how many of the dinosaurs had feathers. Now we have evidence showing that many of them had feathers, which Jurassic World should have used. However, in their defense, Jurassic World's plot revolved around the fact that they forced dinosaurs to look a certain way and that none of them were true dinosaurs. That means they could make the animals look however they wanted without needing to be accurate.
