D3_Download_Link_Surgery_2015
Cross posting this from http://www.descentforum.net/ServerOps/v ... =5692#5692
Just a quick one:
This project is in the making. My first guess is: it will take ~2 months.
The prequel is now 8 years old again (whow!) and since that Thomas coded something way better (with dynamic updates, for even more missions than surgery 2007, with more recent URLs, without the need of hundrets of MSN files stored anywhere, with no need for interaction) into D3Server3. I did put my bits and pieces and ideas into that as well...
However: There are still people who don't use the latest versions of D3Server.
Also: this surgery is very helpful if you are hosting Descent 3 games as a host (from in-game, dedi or not does not matter).
If you are on Linux, using Loki version or not, if you are hosting servers manually - completely without any server tool (like by my tutorial --> http://www.descentforum.net/ServerOps/v ... .php?t=287 ) or by any other server tool or SOD system:
This project might become handy!
This will enable easy / automatic mission downloads from inside Descent3, mission downloads from Vortex, from CC's tracker project, or any other future tool.
Basically I will find one or two more contributors to host mission downloads and then restart the process of creating an update pack which can simply be extracted to a certain folder in your Descent3 directory.
All the download links from the original mission files will get replaced by actually working new ones. Actually only a download link update file for each one will be placed and prioritized over the outdated original file.
Your local mission file will not get touched. You can delete the updated download link files all in one or individually - it won't harm at all.
Reason for the update:
The surgery of 2007 populated these URLs / sources:
http://www.dfiles.de/download/d3/missions/ --> still hosting, but no updates for a couple of years. I just can't get access anymore after a dozen of attempts.
http://d3.koolbear.com/dl/ --> downloads don't work anymore. Never received a message about this.
http://www.descentforum.net/missions/ --> still up to date , alive , solid , heart touching , ass kicking , updated , golden , errrmmmmm, yea - you get it. Last link standing. ;-p
http://www.d3fischlein.de/levels/ --> replaced / updated by http://www.descent3fischlein.de/levels as the old domain went obsolete. Kudos to Fischlein!!
http://www.nub.servegame.org/missions/ --> replaced / updated by http://red.ddns.us/missions. Kudos to Red_Barchetta!!
So as you can see: only Descentforum.NET and and old set of DFiles.de is left from this.
Besides the updates and deletetions I will add:
http://missions.descentforum.de --> this will also replace http://www.descentforum.de/missions as Vortex and some other tools simply can't handle the recently added SSL features. Forwarding is in place to https://www.descentforum.de/missions (notice the https) but https just won't work with Vortex. I decided to mirror the missions on Descentforum.DE (a different server / host / location than descentforum.net) to be without SSL (as it won't make a difference, security wise, anyway).
Two more slots are open. Hosters Welcome! Russian, Asian, Australian and American hosters are preferred! Please no home hosting / dynamic DNS / free webspace services. Experience clearly states: Solid / long term projects are what we need please. If you are interested: You would need to be willing / be able to host at least ~800 missions / zip files of overall ~1 GB data.
OK that's all.
Resume of currently planned hosts / URLs for surgery 2015 (will be updated and rearranged):
http://www.descentforum.net/missions
http://missions.descentforum.de
http://www.descent3fischlein.de/levels
http://red.ddns.us/missions
To be continued!
Thanks!

This server has the bandwidth and the space, but I don't really have the time to do it myself. Could you make do it if I toss a .descentbb.net subdomain and FTP access your way? I know there are already some mission packs and various descent related files buried somewhere on this site, but none of it has been updated in years and it was never anything I messed with anyway.

Sure no probs. That's prolly a good idea so I could remove deprecated versions of missions also, etc.
I did the same for PlanetDescent.com back in the time.
There is a set of scheduled scripts on my servers so for updates I'd actually do nothing manually as it's all done automatically.
I would upload close to one GB of Data / zip files.
Currently it works the way that new missions uploaded and entered into the database of www.Descent3Fischlein.de (hosting and maintaining for 15 years)
will get uploaded to the DF.net as soon they have been approved to be valid and I'll get a mail by Fischlein (automated) about it.
The files get extracted to the DF.NET game servers automatically so they can be used for game server hosting.
Then the data will get mirrored to DF.DE on a nightly schedule.
DBB.net would fit in very well here I think
Give me a nudge when you've set the subdomain and upload creds up.

I can also some throw some space your way if you need it, over at the Sectorgame server. Just let me know and I can set you up

Re: D3_Download_Link_Surgery_2015
I have a project that has been on the back-burner forever over at http://www.descentuniverse.com. As life goes on I still keep a lookout for a way to work it in. I'd be happy to do the same arrangement as Krom--FTP access and a sub-folder or sub-domain. It's regular shared hosting through inmotionhosting.com. I've had it for quite a while, and I don't plan on dropping it. Part of the plan was to host missions eventually anyway, as the name implies. Shoot me a PM if you're interested, and I'd be happy to set up whatever you need.

Re: D3_Download_Link_Surgery_2015
Krom: Thanks! I will set it up soon! Thanks a bunch!
Pete, I'd be happy about that. That way you'd be updated with any new / or old missions which gets uploaded to www.Descent3Fischlein.de or I see / receive / add.
ST! Thanks mate! The applies to you, but I am very happy to say that we have got more than enough volunteers now, especially after Red_Barchetta also said, he'd be in again (after Krom and Pete that).
So if you want me to keep you in the loop, I'd put you in, and otherwise: Thanks for the offer anyway!

Re: D3_Download_Link_Surgery_2015
Necro update: The actual need for this went to zero after Thomas and me worked together on getting this into the D3Server3 tool.
However: Since most of the available resources around D3 went down by now I recently picked up on this again.
Details will be posted on the ServerOps forum only as it is only relevant for one guy ATM. http://www.descentforum.net/ServerOps/v ... =5782#5782
Once the update is release I will post it on DBB as well of course
