Who is the best point gaurd in the NBA

Post by Dedman »

The discussion on the Pistons' PG Billups got me thinking. Who do you consider the best (as in most effective) point gaurds to have played in the NBA.

My vote goes to John Stockton.

to have played, magic johnson.

still playing? jason kidd.

up and comers? tony parker and dwayne wade, but he's a 2 guard at heart.

chauncey isn't a bad player, but he's not a very good point gaurd. he's just a short 2 gaurd playing on a team with no real point gaurd.

Over 15,000 assists can't be wrong.

Jason Kidd with out a doubt is the best PG in the league. he's also one of the best players in the league. he's truly a rare breed for todays PG's and the throw back, he thinks pass first something that most PG's dont do in todays game. and Oscar Robinson was the best PG ever to play the game, the only man to ever average a triple double for an entire season

Oscar Robertson, the "Big O," is the player against whom all others labeled "all-around" are judged, and he may remain the standard forever.

"The Big O" Oscar Robertson is recognized as one of the game's most versatile players of all-time.

Statistically, one need look no further than the numbers Robertson put up in 1961-62, just his second year in the league: 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game-an average of a triple-double for an entire season. Not even Magic Johnson or Larry Bird could match those numbers.

During his 14-year NBA career with the Cincinnati Royals and the Milwaukee Bucks, Robertson became the top-scoring guard of all time, amassing 26,710 points. Among all players, only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, and Hakeem Olajuwon have scored more.

His average of 25.7 ppg per game ranks as the sixth-highest mark ever among retired players, and he averaged 30 points or more in six seasons. Although John Stockton and Magic have surpassed Robertson's career record of 9,887 assists, some argue that Robertson's total came in an era when an assist was credited much less generously than it is today. Robertson also averaged 7.5 rebounds for his career and led his team in rebounding once, a rare feat for a guard.

I'd have to say all-time would be Stockton or the Big O...I just love saying the Big O. Anyway, I also have to say that though J-Kidd is an awesome PG, he -choked- in the playoffs this year, and the ability to preform in the playoffs is what sets apart the good and the great.

BTW, I was never a big basketball fan, in fact I used to hate it...but more and more I'm drawing to like it because of this year's playoffs.
