Body modifications anyone?
I wonder if I'm the only one viscerally repulsed by so-called 'body mods.' (This includes tattoos.)
People fail to realize how permanent and possibly dangerous these things are. If you regret your choices in body mods, your body is going to pay for it in scarring and possible nerve pain (or worse..) FOR LIFE.

But come on. This is just nasty...

vision, the whip isn't necessary right now.
Just about everyone I know has tattoos of various sort. I don't see them regretting them at all. True, some of them can be rather poorly thought out, but there are some that are very intricate and elegant. I'm not a fan of them myself, but I can respect their choices.
and NOT judge them for their method of adornment.

it's their choice. Not mine, and I've never had a tattoo. Some of them seem to be odd choices, and some seem rather permanent, but, to each their own.

Why not? Are they not done to explicitly evoke external reaction?Ferno wrote:and NOT judge them for their method of adornment.
Re: Body modifications anyone?
That depends. I have several tattoos but none of them can be seen by the public because I keep them covered >99% of the time. They are personalized art for my sake and no one else. Some people engage in body modification for introspective reasons. But I will agree that generally speaking all this stuff is just for decoration and intended to be shared publicly.Vander wrote:Why not? Are they not done to explicitly evoke external reaction?

Re: Body modifications anyone?
I've been considering getting a tattoo for a couple of years now. I don't have the complete design worked out, but it'll be something meaningful and unique.
I hope that people who see it (typically, that will be people I know and intentionally show it to) will receive it well, but I understand that some people (including at least one family member) will always be repulsed by it. That's just part of the deal, and I'll have to work through that.

Still thinking about it Foil? Is the wife not on board with the idea or are you really having a tough time deciding?
The ONLY thing that stops me from getting a tattoo is the fear of getting some blood borne disease like Hep C or HIV. I don't know how to verify if any tattoo artist is scrupulously clean in their sterilizing methods. Personally, I'd like to get a small Corellian Crescent (Star Wars) on my upper arm. The rest of me is so aged and worn, it would be the best looking thing on my bod.

She's actually okay with it; she's actually given me some really good input on a couple of my ideas. She just wants to make sure I get it on a part of my body that won't distort too much when I get older, and that I go to a good (read: complies with all the right safety procedures) artist.tunnelcat wrote:Still thinking about it Foil? [Edit: The cost is probably the biggest reason for not doing one yet - to get it the size and colors I want, by an established, experienced artist... that isn't cheap.]

Re: Body modifications anyone?
You'd have to put it on skin that's not exposed to the sun as much, or bends and flexes much with movement either. The shoulder blade or upper arm is good if you like to wear shirts with sleeves. But how do you figure out if a tattoo artist is "safe"?Foil wrote:She's actually okay with it; she's actually given me some really good input on a couple of my ideas. I find that sort of thing repulsive, yes. I understand people's reasoning when it comes to tattoos, myself I reached a point in my life where I decided that there are some things which shouldn't be "improved" on to satisfy whims that are passing in nature. I'll never get a tattoo, and you'll never catch me doing something as stupid as body modification--always a bad idea.ThunderBunny wrote:I wonder if I'm the only one viscerally repulsed by so-called 'body mods.' Re: Body modifications anyone?
Two examples in recent years which I've seen jump to mind. Neither repulsed me so much as they amused me. Most recent was some young man I was standing behind at the bank. He had these gigantic holes bored in his ear lobes/lower ear. If I hunkered down, I could spot the teller through his freaking ears! The other was a few years back, walking in the East Village in NYC with my daughter, en-route to a gallery opening. We passed a young woman about my daughter's age, with a complete facial tattoo which made her resemble a sort of artistic cat. Whiskers, wrinkled fur effect, the whole nine yards. In both cases, the thought that came to me was, "this person is going to be constantly puzzled why they never get called back for the second job interview"......

Re: Body modifications anyone?
Most people do it because they view it as a form of self-expression. I haven't yet met a person that gets a tattoo to evoke a reaction from others. But I suppose it can be true in some cases in the sense that some get it to make others believe that they're 'tough'.Vander wrote:Why not? Re: Body modifications anyone?
I think tattoos (to say nothing of more extreme modifications) are pretty stupid at best, and often just flat-out ugly, but if other people want to do freaky stuff to themselves, hey, no skin off my nose.

You want repulsive, take at look at what people are doing in the extreme. Tattoos are nothing compared to this stuff. All I can say is OH MY GOD! GROSS! THESE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY! These pictures make my skin crawl! Be sure to click through all 19 pics for the full gross out effect.Sergeant Thorne wrote:I find that sort of thing repulsive, yes. Oh, I forgot to mention, I plan on getting some functional tattoos in the near future. It will be art that also includes medical information such as blood type, donor status, allergies, etc... I'll get it right on my chest so doctors and EMTs can't miss it.

Re: Body modifications anyone?
Something's been bugging me about this photo, other than the representation of the Muslim repression of their women. See the hand of the woman covered in a black burka or whatever they call it? The hand resting on the man's shoulder almost looks like it belongs to a mannequin's or doll's hand, wearing a black rubber glove. The curl of the hand looks unnatural and rigid. Photoshopped?ThunderBunny wrote:Well, if all else fails...you can cover up at the beach...

Joseph Stalin was paranoid, so he ordered plastic surgeons make about 20 of his counterparts. These doubles instead attended various events. The resemblance was so striking that even bodyguards sometimes could not understand who the real Stalin.
