Trump's groupies

Post by Tunnelcat »

Trump's little overblown-with-the-numbers stadium rally brought out some new and vocal "fans". Probably not the types he wants associated with him either. Poor baby. He's got to take the white supremacists along with the all the other tea partiers.

Come on TC. Really? Lumping the Tea Party in with racists?

for anyone who attended Tea Party rallies in PA(two, myself), the link is quite firm, and quite obvious.

Like anarchists, communists (as in violent overthrow of the government communists) and 'black power' racists in the Occupy Movement?

Exactly Fern- Occupy didn't officially endorse any of that. The Tea Party doesn't endorse white supremacists either- which is my point.

And a site that characterizes the Tea Party as
"The teabagging movement"
isn't exactly unbiased is it?

Which brings up a good point -- particularly for loosely organized movements with no "official platform" or "official spokesman", how do we characterize those groups? With the Tea Party, Occupy, or various hashtag-movements (yesallwomen, defundpp, gamergate, etc.) should we characterize them by the majority, or by the worst elements, or by bad elements that are sufficiently large, or something else? Should we, perhaps, resist characterizing the movement as a whole and instead recognize it as multi-faceted and characterize its individual factions instead? Do we give more weight to the characterizations given by group insiders, "neutral" outsiders, or detractors?

I would say the most honest characterization of the Tea Party in particular is that it's a loose amalgamation of different factions of small-government types, who for various reasons aren't particularly willing to back the Republican establishment. Some of it is conspiracy theorists (birthers etc.) who previously would have been viewed as the crazy branch of Libertarianism; some of it is true small-government types (the sort who think you should get health care by paying a doctor, not through insurance) who previously were the more sane branch of Libertarianism; some of it is school choice advocates; some of it is Koch Brother manipulation; some of it is racist anti-immigration types; etc. There's certainly a lot for detractors to criticize there, but I don't think it helps make your point when the focus is entirely on the worst fringe elements and on crude nicknames like "teabaggers".

I don't think it necessarily speaks poorly of a movement if it attracts some fringe elements. Nor do I think you need to point to fringe elements to show the problems with a movement -- I don't have to point to racists supporting Trump; I can just point directly to Trump saying stupid things about immigration. I don't need to point to anarchists to criticize Occupy; I can criticize their core philosophy directly (possibly even agreeing with some parts of it.) And I don't need to call people "teabaggers" to note that the Tea Party movement has supported some fairly bad candidates for fairly high offices, which speaks to the bulk of the movement being problematic rather than a mere problematic fringe.

not in Central PA. White men and women only. Seeing as how it was 2009 or 2010, I didn't keep any pics(don't even think I took any), but a few fishing buddies suggested I see what the Berks County 'Patriots' were up to. It was disgusting.

Ah...some folksy references with no back up and this serves as some kind of proof?

Then speak out or kick them out if they don't represent your party's values. However, they seem to migrate to Tea Party events like flies to crap all the time. I don't believe Trump himself is a racist, but he may be labeled with that moniker just by association. The Occupy Wall Street movement became infested with extreme leftists and crazies and that put a stain the whole movement.

How do you kick someone out of a political party?

And jeezzee, how many times does it have to be explained that all political parties and movements attract the fringe.

And, why is it anybody's obligation to chastise morons.

Exactly. So why is it that Republicans seem to tolerate the crazy fringe in their party, but those same Republicans complain about the crazy fringe in the liberal party, like WE can do something about them either? In fact, Republicans invariably label the whole Democratic Party based solely on the antics of the minority fringe.

Just because they show up at a rally does not mean they are part of the tea party. So how do you kick out some group that is not a member?
