another question raised is that, after months of claiming wages are driven down by illegal immigrants, now he says wages are too high to begin with?

The two are not mutually exclusive. Wages are too high to compete with 3rd world labor. When 3rd world labor illegally immigrates here, our wages are driven down.
Basically, he wants to drive our wages down, but without the illegal immigration. That's my guess anyways.
As for how his supporters will react, I'm sure they'll eat it up because Trump is so totally awesome. That and they've been eating up supply side for decades. They probably couldn't care less, as long as they can get their two minutes hate on some hippy
