Christians demand a private chapel at Tyson Chicken...

Post by Nightshade »

...no wait...
Last month, a group of 11 workers at Cargill Meat Solutions in Fort Morgan wanted to go pray at the same time in a room in the plant that is set aside for prayer and reflection. Their supervisor asked that the group break up into smaller numbers to not affect production, according to CNN affiliate KCNC.

The workers complied with the supervisor's request and went in smaller groups to pray. But after their shift ended, 10 of the 11 workers resigned, turning in their badges and hard hats, Cargill spokesman Michael Martin told CNN.

News of the dispute spread to other plant employees, and about 150 Somali workers missed work for three days in protest.

so what? And, where did it say they wanted a private chapel? They wished to use the same room designated for all employee prayer groups and such.

You know when the last time was that I made demands of my company contrary to its interests? Glad they were fired. Glad everyone else was fired for skipping work. Happy ending all around. Not so thrilled to hear the "may be re-hired" backpedaling. It's important to have a backbone when it comes to the well-being of your company, and it's important that this backbone run all the way to the top. ★■◆● employees who have no appreciation for the well-being of the company.

now, I agree, Thorne. If management decided that only groups of a certain size could be accomodated at one time, for production reasons, that is it. You have a job, and the job has a purpose. Thus, the employees had the right to walk away from the job, or do as management asked. They also would have the right to question the management call in an unemployment or other hearing in pretty much any state in the nation.
My only beef with NS' remarks was the hype of taking the real demands and exaggerating to a lie.

They are requesting special status where none should be given. All workers should be treated equally- and making additional demands over and beyond those of their fellow workers is what I was pointing out.

all they wanted was private prayer. I presume the Christian employees use that room for such. Ah, and when it is the Rastafarian's turn, out in Colorado, hoo-boy!!

Don't worry, capitalism will save the day. Somewhere out there a company exists who can not only make meat products, but can also accommodate their worker's needs — and that company just got 150 potential employees and the chance to take a bite out of Cargill.

The way capitalism works is that only happens with workers who are in high demand.

I think the Christians should demand a safe room be set up for them.

"I must HAVE missed it"

yes, you did....the part about the private room for prayer already existing. They just wished to use it, were granted access, but the problem became around how many could use it at one time. In that beef, I support the employer, as one cannot have 100 people off the production floor simultaneously.

Sorry, I suggest you look up the meaning of safe rooms before you say the general prayer room, open to anyone, qualifies as a safe room.

Why the hell would another company actively seek to employ 150 employees that demand to be allowed to pray all at the same time?

If it’s a problem for Cargill, why wouldn’t it be a problem for any company?

Why does one company give their employees benefits and a similar company doesn't? The non-profit I currently work for has a gym with a swimming pool, tennis courts, bike paths, and all sorts of stuff I can use anytime I want. They appreciate the mental and physical health of their employees. I'm not siding with the Somalis because it looks like reasonable accommodations were made, I'm just saying capitalism will fix it. That's what capitalism does, right? Any controversy surrounding a company is immediately leveraged against them by competitors.

Not by becoming less competitive.

You take 100 people off of the line, and I’m pretty sure the entire process will stop, and many people not taking a break will be doing nothing.

As for your first question...I can't answer that for every case, but I do know benefits are given when productivity is increased...not the other way around.

........................

EDIT

But, I do agree with you that capitalism (the free market) will take care of the problem…just not in the way you envision, it will probably force religion to take its proper place behind economic reality.

And if Cargill capitulates…well that’s a win for mob tyranny.

Because Muslims are evil and scary and make God-fearing Christian people reflexively reach for their guns. Didn't you know that?
