Silencing Science

Post by woodchip »

So if you still wonder why I think warmers are nutjobs look no further than this.:
The attorney general of the U.S. Virgin Islands is targeting dozens of conservative and libertarian organizations in a racketeering lawsuit against climate change skeptics that has been widely described as an effort to silence political opponents.
Welcome to the new dark ages and the re-kindling of the Inquisition.

Thought it was pretty obvious, taken from here:

So are we back to the McCarthy era again.

Fact checking reveals....

An unredacted copy of the March 15 Exxon Mobil subpoena, obtained Tuesday by The Washington Times, shows Attorney General Claude E. Walker casting a broad net as part of his probe into whether the company committed fraud by challenging the catastrophic climate change narrative.

Right, the AG just happened to include conservative and libertarian groups as part of nailing Exxon. Like I said, hello Sen. McCarthy...

I don't think the advocacy groups Exxon was working with included Greenpeace. I could be wrong!

Lets say the base accusations are true and leave the politics aside, do you think what Exxon allegedly did was a bad thing? (suppress/distort/deny what their own researchers were telling them in regards to climate change)

Interesting question Vander. I view anyone trying to distort reality as being bad whether it is Exxon or East Anglia.

You might want to talk to a few Canadians in Alberta right now who are experiencing epic heat and epic wildfires, IN THE SPRING!

And you might want to remember this is a El Nino year.

Speaking of El Nino, NOAA had to throw out its El Nino model because it was a big FAIL.

No we're not. It's unusual and a bit early, but we've been through this before. Last half of April is the start of our summer.

Still, it seems downright scary that Canada, the land of snow and ice, now burns like a bone dry forest in California.

It's not just an interesting question, it's the crux of the topic! I mean, did you know what Exxon supposedly did before you posted this topic? "Silencing Science" indeed!

If what Exxon allegedly did was a bad thing, perhaps you should reserve a little ire for conservative groups that may have helped them by feeding you a line of bullsh!t (allegedly!) instead of leaping to their defense with cries of McCarthyism.

It seems to me that this is probably an example of what you say drives support for Trump, this is the establishment failing you. (allegedly :))

Yeah but Exxons obfuscation was not illegal and Exxon was not trying to silence scientist that had a opposing point of view...unlike East Anglia.

I don't know. It looks like it's right out of Hades in Alberta right now. When I think of Canada, I think of beautiful forests, gorgeous mountains, white snow and friendly people.

a lot of Americans don't grasp that much of Canada is pretty temperate.

Hell, Oregon is temperate and we're having long droughts and longer fire seasons. Canada is further north than we are, so I'd think that they'd be cooler.

I'm not really sure how to respond to this. These conservative groups from the first post are being subpoenaed as part of a racketeering case against Exxon. What makes it racketeering is the whole trying to silence the opposing point of view for profit angle. Basically the exact opposite of your quoted statement.

Did you follow the events after the fanfare of the disclosure died out? Of course not.

Come on wood, snap out of it. We need you on team reality.

Well, duh Ferno. I'm not doubting you. Don't get your drawers in a bunch. But what I'm wondering since you've lived up there for so long, does the area seem to be getting warmer and drier to you, or is it just normal variation this year? Here in Oregon, it seems it's been getting slowly warmer and drier during the last decade. We've had no snow in the valley for 3 years in a row, this year's snow pack is rapidly melting in the mountains and this is the first year out of three we've had any measurable rain, most of which came in during the last half of winter, all due to the El Nino, and even that seems to have vanished now. Even the trees and bugs are coming out of winter earlier than in the past.

I'm sarcastic to everybody. especially those who type a bit of a daft reply. ;)

It's not really different. It happened a bit earlier, but otherwise it's normal. It always got stonking hot around this time of year.
