The sickness of heterosexuality...

Post by Nightshade »

...at least as lamented by a Vanity Fair writer about the latest Marvel/Disney film:
“As if to put the nail in the coffin of speculation, Bucky and Cap paused for a moment in the middle of snowy Siberia to reminisce about their days chasing skirts in pre-War Brooklyn,” Ms. Robinson wrote Sunday. “It’s a sweet, human bonding moment but one that also bristles with heterosexual virility. If Disney isn’t inclined to give audiences a gay superhero, couldn’t they have at least left us the dream of Bucky and Cap? … Doesn’t ‘Captain America: Civil War’ go out of its way to “define” Bucky and Steve’s relationship when Cap smooches Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) while Bucky looks on approvingly? Where’s the room for interpretation in that moment?”

So being unquestioningly heterosexual is now a sin it seems.

Alright, I didn't bother to read this article and I don't need to for this point. I had a few years experience in the comic book industry and got to know a bunch of writers and artists. Sexuality has always been a theme in comic books, especially super hero ones. The whole industry is full of both repressed and overt sexuality of all colors. Up until the last 20 years or so comics were enjoyed by limited audiences. Now that comics are mainstream and stories are being rewritten (and in many cases heavily sanitized) for larger audiences there are going to be some conflicts when it comes to the subject of sexuality. We live in a nation of prudes. A great number of comic book heroes have storyline that are deliberately ambiguous when it comes to sexuality because part of that genre's appeal is that YOU get to put yourself in the heroes place. On the other end of the spectrum, some characters' sexuality becomes a main part of the storyline. It sounds weird to say, but popular American audiences are not accustomed to the somewhat complex writing that goes into a lot of comics.

Point completely missed.

This has nothing to do with the fact that heterosexuality is being viewed as less than ideal.

Because one person wrote an article on the Internet, so society must be about to collapse!

Would be nice if the world started to realize that heterosexuality, while hugely common, is not the default setting.

Sure whatever...

I would have to assume that something designed by nature for reproduction would have a default setting that insured such a thing.

But, Whatever...

well, actually heterosexuality has to be pretty much the 'default' setting, on your species doesn't reproduce, but I think that what you're getting at is that the reality includes a range of sexuality, and that NONE are either 'sick' or 'wrong'

Right. "Default" implies a design, so in this context I'm correct.
