Free speech? Dissent? Democrats don't want you to have it.
A landmark California bill gaining steam would make it illegal to engage in climate-change dissent, clearing the way for lawsuits against fossil-fuel companies, think-tanks and others that have “deceived or misled the public on the risks of climate change.”
The first-of-its-kind legislation — Senate Bill 1161, or the California Climate Science Truth and Accountability Act of 2016 — is scheduled for floor action Thursday after clearing Senate committees in April and May.
The measure would allow state and local prosecutors to pursue claims against climate-change skepticism as a violation of the state’s Unfair Competition Law [UCL], as well as extend the four-year statute of limitations for such claims retroactively to Jan. 1, 2021.
“This bill explicitly authorizes district attorneys and the Attorney General to pursue UCL claims alleging that a business or organization has directly or indirectly engaged in unfair competition with respect to scientific evidence regarding the existence, extent, or current or future impacts of anthropogenic induced climate change,” says the state Senate Rules Committee’s floor analysis.
Problem is…there is misleading information from both sides, so logically any law should address the problem from both sides…otherwise you can see the obvious political bias, like the back of your hand.
As far as I can tell from reading the bill, this doesn't make climate denial illegal. Rather, it extends the statute of limitations for existing unfair competition laws with specific regard to climate change.

Correct. That's how I interpret it aswell.
Sorry spidey. the evidence supporting what the "sceptics" use is about as thin as a razor blade, and the arguments they use is well... a house of cards.

And that somehow proves there is no misinformation from both sides.
'Both sides do it' is usually a cop out used to obscure or minimize both the differing scale to which 'both sides do it' and the relative consequences of either side ‘doing it.’
any of y'all gotten around to seeing what actual level of support rises to the writers' definition of 'gaining steam' in the legislature, or how minuscule a chance this goofy piece of garbage has of even getting out of committee, let alone passing both Houses and being signed into law?

When one side says "we can prove it" and the other says "It's a conspiracy!", it puts that notion to bed.
your point is that both sides spread misinformation. The evidence shows that one side spreads misinformation, and the other shows fact. Like I said earlier -- that's a house of cards.
your secondary point is protections should be made to punish those who spread misinformation. Nothing wrong with that, and the bill is extending penalties to those who do.

big fan of the pillory myself.......
seriously, I return to my earlier point. Given the absolutely absent chance this proposed bill will ever go anywhere, why get worked up over the matter?
