Post by CDN_Merlin »

HI all,

I'm currently running AVG Free and it's getting on my nerves because it will ALT-TAB me back to windows for it's advertisements it keeps popping up. Are there any other free AV's that don't do this?"

If you haven't gotten a virus yet using avg free, you probably won't get one if you skip the antivirus program entirely (or just fall back on windows defender). Detection rates are generally a load of crap anyway, but if you are suspicious of a file upload it to virustotal or a similar site and check the report. Otherwise just continue to be careful, keep your browser up to date and augment it with a noscript+flashblock equivalent and an ad blocker with a malware domain filter.

I've used Avast free since 9 years ago, and it works pretty nice. Until now it's my AV of choice.

AVG turned off a lot of people when they started selling user data to advertisers.

There is a anti-virus called SecureAPlus that free for one year. Nice thing about it's designed to run as a standalone or as a companion with another anti-virus. It comes with 12 cloud anti-virus engines, has its pros and cons. Two other features it comes with is application whitelisting. So it will prompt you when unknown file tries to execute. Upon that SecureAPlus will also connect to VirusTotal and display the file rating.

I've always used Avast, but lately it's starting to get like every other Antivirus program - Intrusive and annoying. They used to be like 'We can protect your computer' in a soft and mellow voice. Now it's basically like Avast is shouting at you with 'WE CAN SECURE YOUR COMPUTER'

Something like...

Any AV recommendations for an older Kit Kat-based Android tablet?

Not installing apps from untrusted sources. And updating from Kit Kat if possible

I only install apps from the Google Play Store and I'm updated with the OS as far as Google and Samsung will allow with this old of a tablet. It probably has to do with the slower processor speed and memory. The tablet did start out with Jelly Bean and I got as far as Kit Kat with the OS update when I did it.

Thanks Grendel. :)
